How’s this for a spectacle? Dior showed at the Panathenaic Stadium in Athens, which takes pride of place as one of the world’s oldest sporting arenas, and for being the only stadium in the world to be built entirely of marble. “The idea to show inside the stadium was my obsession, because I think it speaks about the relationship that the clothes have with the body—a body that is a performing body,” Chiuri told WWD. Models took a lap around the majestic stadium, lit up by a stunning light show, as well as with braziers burning with a roaring fire, as it did in ancient times. The show even concluded with a fabulous fireworks display that could be seen for miles around, another nod to the show’s sports-inspired collection.

In a series of teasers released by Dior ahead of the show, we saw Chiuri visit several key sites in Greek history—the Knossos Museum, Akrotiri and Delphi—where she admired sculptures of divinities, ceramics inspired by the pregnant female form, and stunning murals that have been preserved through time. These disparate influences culminated in Hellenistic motifs of warrior women and goddesses that were then used on babydoll dresses and tunics. Other motifs in the collection paid tribute to Greece’s location on the Mediterranean with corals and sea creatures.

We’ll all be warrior women when cruise 2022 rolls around, if Dior has anything to say about it. Chiuri may have given us one of the most prominent accessories of the season when she introduced the leather breastplate on the Dior 2022 cruise runway. It literally is the armour that a modern woman needs for every day life. Explaining her decision to include this on the runway to WWD, the designer said, “These corsets protect your solar plexus. It’s also my idea to translate a reference like the Dior corset in a contemporary way.” Harnesses were also another tough trend introduced on the runway—paired with sharply tailored shirts or loose, diaphanous goddess gowns, it was a thoroughly refreshing take on feminine power.

Clearly, even border closures couldn’t stop some of Dior’s biggest celebrity fans from showing their love from their home countries. Blackpink’s Jisoo and Anya Taylor-Joy were among the first to wear the newly-launched collection, while Angelababy, Cara Delevigne, Arizona Muse, Miranda Kerr and other celebrity friends of the house also showed their support for the French house.
