Celebrities from Heart Evangelista to Sofia Andres were present to help ring in Onitsuka Tiger’s diamond year

Built on the mission to merge sports and style, Onitsuka Tiger is celebrating 75 years as a purveyor of Japanese street fashion with a 16-day event held in Tokyo. Held from August 9 to August 25, the occasion celebrates the brand's storied beginnings and steadfast history and is due to conclude just in time for the forthcoming Milan Fashion Week.

To ring in the festivities, celebrities, from Filipino style mavens Heart Evangelista and Sofia Andres to Korean actor Chae Hyssop, made their way to Omotesando to attend an exclusive pre-opening party.

Other international public figures include Malaysian model Hakken Coser, Indonesian singer-songwriter Raisa Andriana, Singaporean actor Desmond Tan, Taiwanese actor Jasper Lui, and Hong Kong influencer Yoyo Cao.

The venue showcases a photo exhibition of Onitsuka Tiger’s history through 75 pairs of shoes, each representing the brand’s evolution as it heads towards its 100th year. The label’s evolution coincides with the rise of Japanese street style’s popularity, now distinguished by sleek silhouettes, experimental design, and a seamless fusion of heritage and futurism. It warrants no argument that the brand has directly contributed to this subculture’s overall aesthetic.

Onitsuka Tiger was established in 1949 by Kihachiro Onitsuka, who believed sports could penetrate other business sectors, including the fashion world. His vision was a success, as proven by its references in pop culture, from Bruce Lee’s iconic martial arts films to Uma Thurman’s iconic fight sequence in 2003’s Kill Bill: Volume 1.

Aptly, both Evangelista and Andres attended the event donning signature pieces from Onitsuka Tiger. While Evangelista channelled sporty chic in high-top sneakers and a mini-dress over a logo t-shirt, Andres opted for a classic look with a black dress paired with the brand’s famous yellow Mexico 66 shoes.
