Paris Fashion Week Fall 2021: Hermès Reinvents The Birkin Bag
Three continents, three cities, a 14-hour time zone difference, 21,000 kilometres—Nadège Vanhee-Cybulski staged her most ambitious show yet for Hermès fall-winter 2021, starting in New York, then heading onward to Paris, and finally concluding in Shanghai.
Watching the triptych of shows—as Hermès referred to it—was a visual delight. Kicking things off in New York, choreographer Madeline Hollander presented a graceful display celebrating the beauty of gestures, with dancers traipsing around a stage draped with on-brand orange curtains that rotated as the troupe moved lithely across and around them.
This then segued into the brand’s highlight of the evening—the FW21 show in Paris—that included models strutting down the runway in streamlined dresses, cosy blanket capes, and all-around comfortably luxe essentials for the modern woman.
The last instalment of the triptych ended with a performance art piece by Gu Jiani in Shanghai, where the actors leapt and climbed and swooped around the space, moving orange boxes around as they did so in an arresting display.
But, the real scene-stealers, for us at least, were the new accessories that Vanhee-Cybulski introduced on the runway. What caught our eye: a new interpretation for the classic Birkin, with a detachable compartment that can be used as a clutch; a new Double Tour strap for the Apple Watch Hermès; the Kiss Holder—a new, super chic leather accessory (worn as a necklace) to hold your Hermès lip balm; a leather keychain lariat that will elevate your workwear a few notches; and the brand new Hermèsway—a four-in-one bag with a card slot, a lipstick slot, an AirPods slot and a larger holdall slot. Just looking at them will make one’s fingers reach for the credit card.
Take a closer look at the most covetable accessories from Hermès FW21 that we’re putting on our wish lists right now.
