Cover Dior x sacai Spring 2022 collection

Dior Homme's artistic director Kim Jones works alongside Chitose Abe of the iconic Japanese luxury streetwear brand, sacai, to create a capsule collection

This year will undoubtedly be defined by extraordinary fashion collaborations. Only six months in and the fashion world has already been treated to several thrilling iterations—among them Gucci x BalenciagaPrada x Adidas, and now Dior x sacai.

Credit goes to Dior Men's artistic director Kim Jones for this boost of street cred; after all, he has spent his entire career introducing modern elements into often-conservative luxury fashion houses. Think Supreme at Louis Vuitton as well as Stüssy and artist Kaws at Dior.

This year alone, he has, in his personal capacity, teamed up with Nike and Converse on luxury sneakers. And it would appear that his penchant for reinventing iconic fashion pieces led to this new and exciting creative partnership with sacai.

This capsule collection is an unmistakable fusion of the two brands' aesthetics and ethos.

In the accessories department, Jones and sacai's founder Chitoshi Abe—longtime friends but first-time collaborators—present the iconic bags Saddle bags with sacai's trademark utilitarian embellishments, such as pockets or water bottle holders. The larger totes are punctuated with a mix of olive-hued leather and nylon with bright orange drawstrings, echoing of the classic sacai bomber jacket. The instantly recognisable Dior Snow and Dior Explorer boots are also elevated, quite literally, with bold layers on the soles.

As for the garments, the entire collection is a unique blend of Dior's elegant Parisian heritage with sacai's trademark style, which channels practical workwear and sportswear elements. We see the reinvention of classic Dior signatures—such as the distinctive Tailleur Oblique silhouette, floral embroidery and Stephen Jones' soft berets—in a simple palette of black, white and Japanese denim.

In stark contrast to Jones' own colourful fall-winter 2021 collection which incorporates the nature-inspired artworks of Scottish painter, Peter Doig, this new capsule collection perhaps hints at a shift away from the maximalist trends dominating runways in 2021.
