In 2019, Ming Ho-Tang was named one of Tatler’s Asia’s Most Stylish honourees. This month, the director of corporate development at Li & Fung looks back at her favourite style moments, reveals her fashion icons from decades past, and dishes out advice on how to elevate your personal style

My parents [Silvana and Stanley Ho Sau-nan] were in the garment business and when I was young, they often took me and my siblings to their offices and factories. At their workplace, I learnt about design and the production process of garments and developed an interest in fashion from there.

My mother was also into fashion when she was younger. On Sundays, after our family lunch, she would take us shopping. When I got married, she gave me the long feng gua [a traditional Chinese bridal garment also known as qungua] that she wore at her wedding. I wore it to my wedding tea ceremony. The intricate and elaborate embroidery on the gua is amazing.

My early fashion inspirations were from movies, movie stars and great singers. Some of the trends that I embraced included the torn sweatshirt worn off the shoulder à la [1983 film] Flashdance. I was inspired by Brooke Shields and her hair bands; Kate Moss and Gwyneth Paltrow when they wore slip dresses in the 1990s; the boldly coloured outfits by Versace; and the body-hugging looks by Alaïa and Thierry Mugler worn by so many celebrities in the 1980s and 1990s. Over the years, through trial and error, I’ve learnt from my fashion mistakes. It takes practice and experimentation [to get your look right]. Now, I understand what colours suit my skin tone and will select silhouettes that complement my figure.

My style icons are Grace Kelly and Audrey Hepburn. Because of them, I gravitate towards timeless and classic silhouettes. They also inspired me to accessorise with sunglasses. My favourite fashion brands are Chanel, Dior, Alaïa, Valentino, Oscar de la Renta and Dolce & Gabbana.

My most memorable fashion moments are from three different Tatler Balls: in 1996, when I received the Most Up-to-Date Wardrobe Award; in 2005, when I won the Sophisticate Award; and 2018, when I received the Most Stylish Woman Award. I hope I can share my love of fashion and inspire others to love fashion too. It’s an art to be able to express one’s personality, feelings and emotion. I hope rather than fast fashion, people will focus on quality, as well as long-lasting and timeless pieces.

I’ve learnt that when you don’t feel comfortable in your outfit, you don’t look good. Always plan ahead, and try on your wardrobe beforehand. Also, have a good tailor! As for my wardrobe, I only keep pieces that I love and wear—and not clothes that I put on but take off before leaving the house.

To elevate your style, you should focus on quality over quantity, know your body shape and wear clothes that fit and complement your figure, and are practical for your lifestyle. Remember hair, make-up and accessories are important. A statement item always makes a big difference.

I would say my style is classic and romantic, yet contemporary. It is quite easy to balance my personal style and be professional and presentable at all times. Also, I can adapt to the latest trends but still stay true to my personal style by adding trendy accessories or colour to my outfits. My style reflects my personality and my outfits complement my environment. When I feel great in my outfits, I am confident and feel that I am up for any challenge.

The most important thing is to be confident, so you should wear something that makes you feel great and comfortable. Remember: wear the clothes and don’t let the clothes wear you.
