From Ed Sheeran wearing vegan shoes to Demi Moore in a gown made of upcycled wallpaper, these are the stars who considered the impact of fashion on climate change and chose sustainable fashion

This year’s Met Gala dress code of “The Garden of Time”—a reference to the 1962 short story with the same name by J.G. Ballard—was reflected in the many floral-inspired gowns that graced the “red” (actually green) carpet. Many designers and celebrities also thought about sustainability, perhaps as a nod to the morals highlighted in the sci-fi story: that tampering with nature is futile and that time runs out for all, no matter how much we try to reverse it.

The theme was an interesting choice for fashion’s biggest night, given that it’s no secret that fashion is among the most polluting industries in the world. Tough or impossible-to-recycle synthetic material makes up more than half of the clothing in circulation, adding to a never-ending waste crisis spanning across lands and leaking into oceans. But at this year’s Met Gala, seven celebrities stood out for making sustainable fashion choices.
