Cover Louvre Museum celebrates haute couture heritage in its first fashion exhibition in history

A new conversation between fashion and art unfolds through Louvre Couture. Art and Fashion: Statement Pieces—marking the first time in history that the Louvre Museum dedicates an entire space to fashion. This landmark exhibition affirms fashion’s rightful place within the realm of fine art.

Fashion and art have long been entwined in a relationship both intricate and evocative. Where art captures the essence of an era, fashion pulses with the energy of the present, mirroring change in real time. And yet, fashion’s status within the art world remains a subject of ongoing debate.

This year, the Louvre—synonymous with French cultural prestige—presents a striking new perspective in Louvre Couture. Art and Fashion: Statement Pieces. In this unprecedented move, the museum offers an immersive space where fashion is not merely observed as seasonal flourish, but recognised as a vital strand of contemporary artistic expression.

The exhibition also offers a quiet, persuasive counterpoint to Karl Lagerfeld’s famous assertion: “Art is art, fashion is fashion.” Here, couture pieces are not relegated to isolated display, but thoughtfully placed alongside iconic works—Vermeer’s The Lacemaker or Ingres’ Grand Odalisque—in an elegant curatorial dialogue across time and medium.

Reaching beyond painting, the exhibition embraces the decorative arts in full: Renaissance tapestries, intricate ceramics, evocative portraits and expressive sculpture. Visitors are invited to trace the sources of influence that have, for centuries, shaped the evolution of fashion.

Set across nearly 9,000 square metres, the exhibition presents garments selected with care to reveal the ongoing exchange between art and dress. Among the highlights: a Dolce & Gabbana gown glistening with crystal embroidery, echoing 11th-century mosaics at Santa Maria Assunta; a minimalist 1961 silhouette by Balenciaga; a Dior creation in silk, referencing the Sun King and placed opposite a baroque portrait of Louis XIV; and a 1997 Gianni Versace metal mesh design, ablaze with Swarovski crystals and bold Byzantine accents. Each piece offers a distinct interpretation of artistic legacy, filtered through the language of fashion.

The exhibition’s curatorial precision is evident in its placement within the Department of Decorative Arts. Each fashion object is carefully chosen to reflect an existing thread of connection. The department itself owes much to the generosity of fashion luminaries from Jacques Doucet to Madame Carven, who contributed to its rich holdings. These links, though varied, are united by a shared reverence for technique, visual culture, and the subtle interplay of inspiration—from meticulously documented archives to the designer’s intuitive collage of influences. Above Fashion claims its place within the canon of art, as both homage and harbinger of creativity to come

This exhibition does more than trace the parallels between fashion and art. It asserts that, despite its commercial associations, fashion continues to embody deep artistic merit. Ever engaged in conversation with history, fashion claims its place within the canon of art, as both homage and harbinger of creativity to come.
