Designers are embracing the mood-lifting shade with a vengeance this pre-fall 2021

It’s been 16 years since Jason Mraz declared himself the geek in the pink, but the colour has made a comeback in the pre-fall 2021 collections and proves that everyone—not just geeks—are still enamoured with the power of pink. From pale pastel to cheery cerise, designers such as Chanel’s Virginie Viard, Balenciaga’s Demna Gvasalia and Alexander McQueen’s Sarah Burton have all fallen for the feminine colour, using it throughout their collections in fresh ways.

At Burberry, Riccardo Tisci infused his outdoors-inspired collection with a blast of all-over pink, giving structure to the look through precise tailoring. Similarly, Maggie Marilyn employed a pastel pink hue to great effect by using it on a double-breasted coat.

Less formal options can be seen in Gvasalia’s irreverent and ironic oversized Balenciaga hoodie emblazoned with the word “gay”, while Chanel took the mod route by pairing a white jacket and graphic checkerboard skirt with accents of pink.

For evening, sweeping statements were made by Giambattista Valli—who adores pink and uses it in almost every collection—and Alexander McQueen, where the soft beauty of the colour was juxtaposed against tough-as-nails leather boots (a superb styling trick to dial down the saccharine sweetness of the shade).

Scroll through our top picks of the season and get inspired to inject your own wardrobes with a powerful punch of pink.
