Collector's Item: Louis Vuitton's 2018 FIFA World Cup Trophy Trunk

The Louis Vuitton FIFA World Cup trunk case is fast becoming an icon of the every-four-year event, and certainly worth the wait

From Russia with love, the FIFA World Cup Russia 2018 will kick-off next month in Moscow. And French fashion maison Louis Vuitton has been commissioned again to make a special case to hold the game’s Official Trophy—something that first started for Louis Vuitton back in Brazil in 2010—to provide a bespoke case to ensure the trophy travels in safety and in style.

And it’s luxurious enough to eclipse the trophy itself. Handmade in Asnieres, France, the trunk is licked in laser-engraved monogram titanium, for a contemporary twist on the famed trunk. Cowhide corners soften the silver, while ruthenium lock and clasps are a clever hardware point; the chemical symbol for ruthenium is Ru, much like host nation, Russia.

For those wanting an even more memorable Louis Vuitton World Cup keepsake, the Paris leather connoisseur has teamed up with sports veteran Adidas to create an exclusive match ball trunk.

With only 21 available for purchase worldwide, the trunk will hold 13 re-editions of the Official Match balls used at the World Cup, those in play since 1970, and one Louis Vuitton specially designed football for the Russia 2018 edition of the cup.

A little less limited in number, Louis Vuitton has additionally crafted official bag and leather goods, as part of its FIFA World Cup Product Collection.

Fans of football can score a playful football-inspired Keepall or Apollo bag, along with a selection of smaller leather pieces. A logo unique to Russia 2018 has also been created for the design with the initials 'L.V' used like a team's crest.

Continuing the company's long tradition of personalisation, a customisation tool will give fans the chance to create original and unique flag-inspired coloured versions of the collection’s Keepall bags during Russia 2018; the next best thing to getting a signed players’ jersey, and far more utile.

The Louis Vuitton Official FIFA World Cup Trophy Trunk for Russia 2018 will be showcased on the pitch in Moscow at the Opening Match on 14 June, and at the Final on 15 July.
