Cover Eunhye Shin on her fashion label, Le 17 Septembre, which features well-crafted knitwear and everyday staples

We spoke with former fashion blogger Eunhye Shin on her fashion label, Le 17 Septembre

If you’ve been seeing some chic, city-ready loungewear on your favourite Instagram influencers lately, it’s likely from this blossoming Korean label. Named after its founder’s birthday, Le 17 Septembre was launched by former fashion blogger Eunhye Shin and is beloved internationally for its well-crafted knitwear and everyday staples. Her minimalist silhouettes range from roomy trench coats to jumpers with subtle details, all of them made responsibly using sustainable methods. Find them at Net-a-Porter.

How did you first realise you wanted to work in fashion?

I’ve always pursued beauty. For a few years I was a fashion blogger and at some point I started to make my own clothes and everyone began asking me where I got them from. The rest, as they say, is history.

What were some of your first concerns when you started the brand?

I’d worried about how to introduce the brand to Europe and the US, but then we were picked up by Net-a-Porter during our first season on the market, giving us a global audience. We are also doing our best to be more sustainable with each season. In the very beginning we only produced a limited quantity to reduce our carbon footprint and avoid overproduction, but now we’re starting to incorporate recycled fabrics as well as non-dyed ones to minimise our pollution. This approach requires longer lead times and testing, but we believe it’s worth it.

What was your first job?

I started my career in music and majored in violin. After college, for almost ten years, I was in the music industry, which, in hindsight, contributes to my aesthetic vision for Le 17 Septembre today.

Which celebrity do you want to dress?

I definitely want to dress Tilda Swinton—I love her style so much. Also Gwyneth Paltrow and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley because of the values they promote and because their style reflects our aesthetic of minimalism and simple luxury. We’re all about allowing personality to stand out against the clothes.

Where is the first place you look for inspiration?

For me it is always about the fabric: it’s the starting point of my work. I look at it and imagine how I can make it look beautiful on a body, and that’s how my design inspiration happens. It is also important for me to introduce Korean ethical cultural codes in my design, but in a very discreet, quiet way.

Do you have any Christmas traditions?

I always holiday in Hawaii for Christmas. It’s the best present for me every year
