Kim Jones has done it again! With a track record of delivering the most covetable collaborations in fashion—think: Kaws, Daniel Arsham, and Shawn Stussy in his tenure at Dior Men’s, and high-profile co-branded capsules with Fragment and Supreme at Louis Vuitton—you can almost always count on him to bring a surprise every season. Spring/summer 2022 is no different, with the prolific collaborator looking to the Far East—Japan, to be precise—for his next partnership.
Chitose Abe and Sacai have engaged in a “dialogue” with the French luxury brand, bringing its achingly cool brand of sportswear design to the table. Sacai’s design philosophy of creating hybrids in fashion flows through the capsule collection: Classic Dior silhouettes have been reimagined in new fabrics and techniques by way of Sacai; Dior’s signature floral embellishments have been fused with modern fabrications seen at the Japanese label; and sharp-eyed fans will notice the new variation in the Dior logo, with the “i” being replaced by the one found in Sacai’s logo.
In addition to ready-to-wear pieces, bags and accessories have also been given the Sacai touch. The Saddle bag, for one, has been given a refresh with utilitarian materials such as nylon, a Sacai favourite; while Sacai’s signature pearls have been added to Dior Men’s gold- and silver-finish brass jewellery and accessories.
“Sacai is one of my first stops when I go to Japan,” Jones told WWD. “I’ve always loved [Chitose Abe] and I just think she’s one of the coolest women in the world. And we talked about doing this since I was at Vuitton, and then finally it happened.”
Jones and Abe have been friends for 15 years, and, in the same interview with WWD, she talked about the collaboration being a “huge honour” and that it showed just how “committed to always being innovative and challenging” both Dior and Jones are.
