"I thought of the shows that Karl would tell me about, back in the day, a long time ago, when the models would dress themselves and do their own make-up,” says Virginie Viard, in the fall-winter 2021 collection show notes. In a short film directed by famed Dutch photography duo Inez and Vinoodh, models in tweed coats—this time with boxy shoulders, chevron motif and floor sweeping lengths—crossed each other casually on streets before being seen getting ready backstage at Castel, the restobar where the film was shot.

The idea of contrasts continues to be a strong theme in Viard's collections, namely in the balance between heavy outerwear with skimpy crop-tops or leg-baring mini-shorts, while faux fur boots are paired with classic tweed skirt-suits. Fur boleros and gilets, lined similarly to the Maison's tweed jackets, are worn with scrabble-like rainbow printed miniskirts.

Skiwear also made its way into the lineup—a salopettes-ski suit in white quilting embroidered with red and blue motifs being a particularly fun addition. The alpine sweater, in Viard's favourite palette of blues and hot pinks, are styled with city-friendly trousers or tweed skirts. “This collection is a mix of two influences: the ambiance of ski holidays, which I adore, and a certain idea of cool Parisian chic, from the 1970s to now," says Viard.
