Now that the Fashion Week 2017 shows have drawn to a close, we have gotten an exciting glimpse of whats to come. Here, in my opinion, are the key trends to watch out for, based on the most notable looks from the recent runway shows. Get inspiration from these looks in order to incorporate the designer's aesthetic into your wardrobe. No matter what season you are in around the world (in constant heat for us), you will be able to include some of the Fall/Winter trends into your tropical attire, one way or another. I have selected my favourite collections to give you some useful style inspos on your next shopping trip:
Mirror, mirror: CHANEL

The world according to Karl: feathers, lilies and mirrored walls. Could we have expected anything less flamboyant? No, yet the surprises and thrills never wane. For the Chanel Spring /Summer 2017 show he turned up the intense renderings on glitz and glamour with allover abstract crystal embroideries. Specks of silver reflected through mirored panels, from belts to shoes on spectacular evening looks- you read that right, belts worn with evening gowns, having a sense of lady-like restriction and elevating such flamboyat materials in a real, grown-up context.
New Neutral: VALENTINO

Chic romanticism and feminine fragility with a strong reference to Italian historicism in the Middle ages. Pierpaolo Piccioli’s collaboration with Zandra Rhodes successfully evoked Valentino’s gentle spirit throughout the collection. Show stopping floor length dresses sashayed at every corner in graceful motions from the most vivid to the most delicate shades of pink, leaving us with fanciful ideas on how to incorporate this colour trend in our daily ensembles.
Flashdance Shoulder: SAINT LAURENT

Off the shoulder obsession rages on and the 80’s revival has taken hold of the fashion world. Anthony Vaccarello proves he does it best at his first show as Creative Director for Saint Laurent. He opened the show with a black leather dress with puffed shoulders, a famous YSL creation that made its first appearance in 1982 for the fashion label’s collection. This was followed by models that strutted the runway in a variety of 80’s references like gold lame and velvet tops all in asymmetrical cuts and in variations of one-sleeved pieces.
A Man’s World: CELINE

Boxy shoulders, and over sized suits, you know a Celine woman when you see one. The kind of cool Phoebe Philo is all about: anti-style, unpretentious and nonconformist. Basic staples and classic pieces derived from menswear and worn in uncoventional ways, a rebellious streak that has always set the label apart from your usual normcore reference. The oversized button-down shirt trend has been seen all over the streets of fashion week- and got us rummaging through our boyfriend’s closet.
New Classics: LOUIS VUITTON

Birthing the term “New Classics”, the 90’s inspirations were evident in the tailoring details for this show. They had a relaxed fit but a sleek silhouette reminiscent of the 90’s grunge and hip styles, it was anything but loose and carefree; instead rigorously sharp with jagged angles. Many of the jackets were slit along the sleeves, skirts were slit to the thigh in executive precision- from jutting necklines to shoulders that were cut to slant forward, even underarms and sleeves that are dramatically sliced open. These modern power suits make a good fit for the future’s stylish CEOs.
