Doraemon Goes Green For a Good Cause
Doraemon activates "sustainability mode" this season by going green... literally. The much-beloved Japanese robotic cat from the future teams up with fast fashion retailer Uniqlo as the brand's new Global Sustainability Ambassador, with the aim of showcasing how consumers can change the future of the world "through the power of clothing."
"Hi everyone! I'm Doraemon and now I am Green!" Doraemon said in a statement (yes, that's a direct quote—he speaks exclusively in exclamatory sentences). "I'll do my best as Uniqlo Global Sustainability Ambassador to help create a much brighter future! I want to work with you all, so we can make people everywhere more interested in the future of our world!"
In a more subdued statement, Koji Yanai, Group Senior Executive Officer of Fast Retailing, said: "Over the past two decades, Uniqlo has undertaken numerous sustainability initiatives through business to contribute to a better, more sustainable world. We believe that the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, social transformations, and evolving consumer attitudes make it more important than ever to collaborate with customers and other stakeholders in driving positive social change."
To that end, Uniqlo plans on enlisting Green Doraemon's presence to help present the brand's sustainability initiatives in "fun and easily understandable ways" in programming such a, but not limited to, the Uniqlo school outreach for students in Japan, participating in sports events, and by promoting apparel made from environmentally-friendly materials.
This year has been a big fashion year for Doraemon, who, earlier, in January, appeared in Gucci campaigns as well as on apparel and accessories as part of the Chinese New Year Doraemon x Gucci collaboration.
