Kim Jones puts a spin on the Dior Oblique motif with Dior Gravity leather, redefining iconic bags, shoes and other menswear must-haves

The Dior Men’s pre-fall collection 2024 encapsulates effortless elegance and refinement. Designer Kim Jones skilfully combines expert tailoring with playful dress codes, showcasing overcoats adorned with bold geometric cut-outs, wide-legged shorts lined with delicate organza layers, tie-fastened vests, Dior Oblique knitwear and more.

Jones also offers his take on the three-piece suit for Dior, challenging expectations by opting for a relaxed robe and shirt ensemble instead of a conventionally close fit. This relaxed approach underscores Jones’ adeptness at marrying luxury with functionality, drawing inspiration from timeless designs while transcending conventional masculine norms.

Accessories play a crucial role in elevating the softened silhouettes with structured elements to complete this vision of modernity. Dior Gravity leather makes frequent appearances. The iconic material conceived by Jones adapts the emblematic Dior Oblique motif into two memorable iterations.

In the first variation, the motif appears at its original scale on small leather goods. The second version upscales the motif to a maxi size for use on bags.

Embossed leather dates back to the 4th century, when it often adorned leather saddles, armour, and clothing with decorative designs. With centuries to evolve, Dior brings the ancient craft into the 21st century with exceptional savoir faire. The unique embossing technique developed by Dior gently scores leather using the weight of gravity to leave a lasting impression. It is from this novel technique that the range derived its name: Dior Gravity.

The grained texture and supple, refined effect define this innovative material, delivering a different spin on the Oblique pattern, which repeats “Dior” in a consecutive way. The original motif was created in 1967 by former Dior artistic director Marc Bohan, who derived the pattern name from an eponymous collection by Christian Dior for the fall-winter season of 1950-1951. The Dior Oblique pattern first emerged to the public during the spring-summer 1969 collection, soon becoming a part of the Couture House DNA in 1974.

The Dior Gravity leather comes in a palette of versatile shades, including beige, black and khaki. Jones celebrates the maison’s heritage by dressing a selection of creations in the iconic leather, including messenger bags and the weekender model. The hypnotising graphics also adorn numerous essential accessories, from belts to cardholders.

The soft-grained calfskin is carefully handled throughout the Dior Gravity production process, from hand-cut leather inserts to the hand-application of the Dior embossed signature. Bags like the Weekender 25, The Rider 2.0 and The Weekender 40 are assembled thoughtfully, from the grained calfskin handles with hand-dyed edges to carefully affixed metallic hardware. Beyond bags and accessories, Dior Gravity leather also enhances the B33 and B27 sneakers, with both shoes boasting bold, modern and elegant lines.
