Two Belgian icons, Delvaux and René Magritte, intertwine in a creative ode to love

When it comes to luxury handbags, there are few names that rival the prestige and reverence given to Delvaux. Since it was founded in 1829, the iconic Belgian maison has been at the forefront of craftsmanship and innovation, for example patenting the first leather handbag in 1908, and becoming known as one of the pioneering creators of the modern bag.

Fast forward 194 years, and the legendary house continues to cement its defining brand values through a collaborative collection that celebrates both historic Belgian-born icons and trailblazing creativity. The product: an Asia-exclusive capsule that honours 125 years of René Magritte, the master of surrealism and one of the greatest Belgian artists of all time. In collaboration with the Magritte Foundation, the collection expands on Delvaux’s current Magritte range with an ode to the twin loves of his life: his wife Georgette Berger and his art.

Marking this unique tribute to 125 years of René Magritte, Delvaux is also showing an extra-special exhibition with both interactive digital art and classical masterpieces that display seven of his iconic works in a never-before-seen public showcase. Exhibited in the maison’s flagship boutique at K11 Musea until August 13, the exhibition opened with a celebratory cocktail soirée filled with special guests and friends of Delvaux on August 4.

The 125 Years of René Magritte collection is divided into four motifs, each inspired by his signature paintings, and all echoing the wit, whimsicality and perception-probing genius synonymous with the artist. The smooth leather bags mostly feature pastel hues and display supreme craftsmanship—all handmade by the same artisans who have been at the forefront of the Delvaux manufacturing process for decades.

The capsule’s first motif, L’Amour, captures the essence of tender romance and symbolises the eternal love between René and Georgette, with the word “amour” embroidered on styles from both the Brillant and Pin ranges. The second emblem, L’Humour, draws on the artist’s hyperreal depiction of a pipe, with the words “Ceci n’est pas une pipe” (this is not a pipe) playfully embroidered across signature styles including the Brillant and the Pin Mini Bucket. The third motif, La Pomme, pays tribute to another of Magritte’s most iconic symbols, the green apple, which takes centre stage on styles including the Tempête MM with its emblematic structural silhouette, as well as a 3D-molded apple-shaped pouch. Finally, L’Homme honours the mysterious man in the bowler hat, often cited as Magritte’s self-portrait. The silhouette plays out on items including the newly launched Pin City bag and small leather goods.

The collection goes beyond simply being covetable and luxurious, instead consisting of heirloom-worthy keepsakes that represent love, art and a little of that Magritte magic.
