Chelsea Manalo’s breathtaking ‘Hiraya’ costume for Miss Universe 2024 brings together elements of Christianity, Islam, and Indigenous artistry

The Filipino identity, rooted in global influences spanning the East to the West, is anchored by a deep appreciation for the mystical. For Miss Universe 2024 candidate Chelsea Manalo, an authentic celebration of the country’s identity means embracing the far-reaching impacts of Christianity and Islam.

For the preliminary Miss Universe competition, Manalo stunned the audience with an elaborate costume inspired by ‘Hiraya,’ an ancient Filipino word that conveys the deep hopes and wishes that guide one towards one’s destiny.

“Faith can navigate us through life, no matter what religion we believe in,” wrote Dr Arnold P Manuel for the costume’s description. “Despite all the hardships, chaos, roadblocks, and redirection that we go through, believe that there is hope and divine guidance from a Higher Being.”

The Spaniards’ introduction of Christianity to the Philippines is central to its identity. When Manalo turned around to display the intricacies of her costume, she unveiled a vibrant image of Our Lady of Antipolo (Our Lady of Good Voyage). Brought to the Philippines via Mexico in the 16th century, this image of Our Lady has become quintessential to Filipino Catholicism, guiding each person through the triumphs and struggles of life.

Another key component of the costume’s design integrates traces of Islam with Catholic elements, signifying harmony between the two religions. With majestic colours and rich Inaul fabrics from the Province of Sultan Kudarat, Manalo’s costume is proof of fashion designer Manny Halasan’s appreciation for the complexities of Filipino culture.

Additionally, atop Manalo’s head is a bejewelled galleon, in homage to the Galleon trade that brought exotic goods and religious fervour to Filipino shores.

The dress displays intricate Islamic patterns complemented by the ‘Tongkaling,’ bells that create unique sounds in time with Manalo’s graceful steps. These bells equip the wearer with blessings and guidance, guiding Manalo through the Miss Universe pageant. Another distinctive element of the dress is the integration of ‘Puni’ art, a traditional art form from Batangas that weaves coconut fronds together.

Whatever the Miss Universe journey has in store for Chelsea Manalo, she will continue to meet it with the graceful gratitude of her ‘Hiraya’ costume.
