Could a shopping bag change the way a nation consumes? Anya Hindmarch brings her global recycling project to the Philippines to prove that durability is the ultimate solution to plastic waste

British luxury accessories designer Anya Hindmarch has brought her famed Universal Bag to the Philippines. Available exclusively at The Marketplace, this project offers a definitive answer to the problem of single-use waste. This is a shopping bag for those who value utility and logic.

Waste assessments from the Global Alliance for Incinerator Alternatives reveal that the average Filipino uses 174 shopping bags annually. That total reaches 20.6 billion bags across the nation every year. Hindmarch’s solution addresses these figures through longevity. Since the project began in 2021, it has kept 330 tonnes of virgin plastic from landfill. This weight equals roughly 27 London double-decker buses. By turning 100 per cent recycled plastic into a durable tool, the brand shifts the focus from disposal to retention.

The Philippine edition features the signature brown and yellow tones of The Marketplace. It arrives in two sizes, retailing at PHP 699 for the small version and PHP 899 for the regular version. Unlike flimsy alternatives, this bag is built to remain in use for years. Anya Hindmarch believes the solution to plastic pollution must be collaborative. By partnering with global food retailers like Waitrose, Selfridges and now The Marketplace, the initiative transforms a mundane chore into a deliberate choice.

The Solent Group handles the manufacturing, ensuring every material follows the Global Recycling Standard. The goal is to change habits. When an object is sturdy and well-made, owners tend to keep it.

The Marketplace is the first retailer globally to offer both bag sizes at launch. They have been available in 38 stores nationwide since December 2025. If you seek a way to discard old habits, this bag is a sturdy place to start.
