Angela Cheng-Matsuzawa reveals what she’s splurging on this week—from recycled nylon Prada phone cases to Allbirds sustainable sneakers

When Tatler met Angela Cheng-Matsuzawa earlier this year, her energy and drive were palpable. She spoke a mile-a-minute about her twin teenage boys; her husband Masaaki Matsuzawa, a former NBA and Goldman Sachs executive and current president of software group Vobile; her days living in the US, and her passion for sustainability.

In 2010, Cheng-Matsuzawa co-created the juice cleanse company Punch Detox, inspired by her own health and fitness journey after giving birth to her sons. However, she has dedicated the past three years to advocating for environmental sustainability in Hong Kong. In 2018, she and ten prominent Hong Kong women founded Eco Drive HK, a non-profit dedicated to eliminating society’s reliance on single-use plastic and creating awareness around more conscious consumption habits through educational programmes.

As a result, when Cheng-Matsuzawa buys new things, she buys consciously. The eco-warrior tells Tatler what she currently has her eye on—from eco-friendly sneakers to recycled phone cases.

“Everyone needs a little art in their lives and I have been following ceramic artist Stephanie Shih, who lives in Brooklyn, for a while. She does ceramic sculptures of beloved Asian grocery items, and I’m totally obsessed with this bottle of Maggi sauce.”

“I’m keeping my fingers crossed that Masaaki and I will be able to go back to our favourite Singita [a safari company with locations in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Tanzania] lodge to celebrate our 20th anniversary in four years’ time. If travel opens up, we’d even be willing to move that celebration forward. I miss the food, the animals, the photography, the nature ... who’s with me?”

“I have a weakness for [French homeware brand] Astier de Villatte, even though I rarely entertain. But now I am spending more time at home, I will start collecting these handcrafted pieces. Also, I heard their tableware decreases the calories in cakes and make them taste better.”

“Masaaki and I didn’t go to Singita for our anniversary [this year], but we have been eyeing two paintings by Chinese-American artist Ting Walasse for each other. Walasse’s colourful depiction of flowers, women, cats and parrots have such a distinctive style.”

Phone Case, Prada

“Phone cases always seem so wasteful since you have to change your case every time you upgrade your phone, but I think I have come across a solution. The Prada Re-Nylon [made with recycled and recyclable plastic yarn] series has a good one that can fit both my iPhone and my Samsung, so I can switch back and forth.”
