Lady Gaga’s stunning Gucci gown at the premiere of ‘House of Gucci’ helped us remember how impactful purple gowns can be, and we look back at moments from ladies like Anya Taylor-Joy and Zendaya

1. Lady Gaga

Lady Gaga made purple the colour of the moment with this look. The drama, the flourish—it’s all there with a wave of Ms Gaga’s arm. This singer-turned actress loves a grand reveal on the red carpet, and she takes centre stage at the House of Gucci film premiere as she similar did in 2018 for A Star is Born.

2. Lupita Nyong’o

Lupita knows that purple is her colour, and the actress has worn many variations of the colour. While the armour-inspired gown she wore to the Black Panther film premiere comes to mind, it’s her sparkling strapless Calvin Klein look from the 2019 Golden Globes that we love. The periwinkle shade is electric against her skin tone and emphasises the sparkling embellishments.

3. Anya Taylor-Joy

Anya Taylor-Joy accepted her award for ‘Face of the Year’ at the CFDA Awards in this ultraviolet Oscar de la Renta minidress, and it’s a pleasing garment to behold. The deep V-neck draws the eyes down to the nipped in waist, then out to the structed flared skirt. Leopard print and black net accessories are a wild touch, yet somehow not distracting.

4. Zendaya

Zendaya gave us not one, not two, but three consecutive Instagram posts of this gorgeous Versace gown, and for good reason. Both her and the dress are incredible—her long limbs, long hair and major attitude are selling the 2003 fantasy. The pop of lime is a fun contrast, and the 2021 BET Awards was blessed by her presence in this look.

5. Rina Sawayama

This Japanese singer made a fabulous statement at the 2021 Brit Awards in this Balmain dress straight off the runway. The layers of tulle give us everything: asymmetry, height, volume, a crop top and a train. Lilac is such a beautiful shade, and it appears as though she’s a blooming flower.

6. Jessica Chastain

Daphne from Scooby Doo made redheads wearing purple a thing, but Jessica Chastain cemented it at Cannes in 2014 in this ethereal purple gown. The asymmetrical neckline, split skirt and long flowing fabric make for a Grecian effect, and the blue tones in this medium purple complement her hair beautifully.

7. Rihanna

This Givenchy couture number that Rihanna wore to the NAACP Awards was equal parts fashion and art. She went for a boxier silhouette, and structured shoulders gave way to a ruffled skirt while the iridescent quality of the fabric gave the dress even more depth. The black ombre sleeves perfectly framed the silver President's Award she received.

8. Sririta Jensen

Sririta Jensen didn't just go to Cannes in 2019, she owned it. This show-stopping Michael Cinco dress is a structural masterpiece—the cage-like bodice is what holds this dress in place, and the shoulders works against gravity to point up and out. Each tier of her skirt is beautifully pleated and the gradual ombre is a stunning contrast of the red carpet.
