Learn how to bring flower power into your home.

The floral business can often be a romantic one. From meeting each other in a Trader Joe's queue to becoming New York's most buzzed-about husband florist duo, Michael and Darroch Putnam of Putnam & Putnam are now partners in life—and work—with their growing boutique floral design business (check out their 273k followers on Instagram).

With Darroch taking care of the photography aspect and Michael focusing on creating floral arrangements, the duo has worked on projects for high-profile clients such as Cartier, Dior, and Jason Wu. They have also recently done a 14-page editorial shoot for US Vogue.

We spoke to the power couple on their visit to Hong Kong about the latest floral trends and how to make an easy DIY flower arrangement for the home:

Where do you find inspiration?

We draw inspiration from our day-to-day lives in New York, whether it’s from museums or galleries to the latest fashion or trends happening in runway collections. With social media, we live in such a visual world, so we absolutely pull inspiration from all of these outlets.

What is the most challenging project you’ve worked on so far?
Putnam & Putnam (P&P) Our latest runway show for Jason Wu was definitely challenging due to the scale of the installs under tight time constraints. We had just four hours to construct twelve-foot flower towers that took thousands of stems to fill out.

While definitely a challenge, the final effect was very impressive and once the models started to walk down the runway, our florals looked stunning against the collection.

What are some of the hottest floral trends for spring/summer 2018?
P&P Bold vibrant colours. Palettes are getting richer, especially for weddings and events.

What tips do you have for people when sourcing flowers for their own homes?
P&P Strike up a good relationship with a couple of vendors and don’t be afraid to ask questions. Be sure to ask about the proper way to treat flowers and how long each variety will last.

What are some of the simple and DIY-friendly flower arrangements we can create for at home?
P&P Buy unique varieties and put a few stems of each type of flower in a pitcher or tall vase. It's a simple and elegant way to bring flowers into your home.

Tell us about your recent collaboration with Ellermann (in Hong Kong).
P&P We worked with Ellermann on a series of workshops in Hong Kong ranging from hand-tied bouquets, styling a table top with a bell jar arrangement, to large scale arches and on-site interior installs. It’s an honour to be in Hong Kong and we could not be happier with the help of the Ellermann Team.
