Thermage FLX requires no injection and surgery, and continuously improves skin over time

Whether you’ve been actively visiting the spa or struggling to keep up with monthly facial appointments (like most of us), the two-month-long circuit breaker has made many of us realise the importance of a long-lasting and low-maintenance treatment to keep your skin looking impeccable at any moment.

As we patiently await the reopening of our favourite facial spas and aesthetic clinics, there’s no better time to do your research on what your skin needs and what treatment works best for it. We find out more from Dr Gerard Ee, medical director of The Clifford Clinic about Thermage FLX, the new generation skin tightening treatment for the face, eyes and body.

As most of us are familiar, collagen is essential to the hydration and elasticity of our skin, and the production of this protein decreases as we age, causing concerns like wrinkles and fine lines, hooded eyes, and sagging eye bags.

“Radio-frequency (RF) for skin tightening is a non-invasive treatment with no downtime, and effects can be seen after just a single session. In addition, the condition of the skin is expected to improve continuously over the next six months or more,” explains Dr Ee.

“Thermage FLX is unique in utilising patented monopolar RF technology, as compared to traditional bipolar RF in similar treatments. This monopolarity allows RF energy from Thermage FLX to penetrate deeper into the dermis—even reaching the subcutaneous fat, providing better effects as compared to similar treatments using RF energy.”

With Thermage FLX, heat is delivered safely and uniformly into the dermis of your skin to remodel existing collagen and stimulate collagen production in its fibrous network. Completely non-invasive, not even topical anaesthetic is required for the treatment, which is the only FDA-approved skin tightening treatment for the delicate eye area. This results in lifted contours, smoother skin, and improvements in the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, sagging skin, and even cellulite—albeit temporarily for the latter.

Most people will only feel a brief cooling sensation when the handpiece touches the skin, followed by a deep heating sensation when the RF energy is delivered, and finally another cooling sensation with gentle pulses after the RF energy is delivered. Some mild tingling and stinging may also be experienced. In addition, we will check with our patients to adjust the intensity of the heat throughout the treatment, ensuring minimal discomfort.

Thermage FLX is also incredibly easy to maintain—only one treatment of 45 to 90 minutes is required for results that last up to a year, while other radio-frequency treatments would normally require five to six sessions.

“Clients will see tighter skin with less fine lines and wrinkles immediately after the treatment. If performed on the face, clients can see the hollows in their faces filled out and their facial contours lifted,” says Dr Ee.

“As a result of RF energy directly stimulating the skin's regenerative processes, new collagen continues to form over several months to improve the volume and condition of the skin. These effects can be greatly enhanced with repeated sessions annual or biannually.”

So how do you know if Thermage FLX is best for your needs? This anti-ageing treatment is suitable for all skin types and skin tones and works best for those between ages 35 to 60 with concerns on their face and/or body—such as lines on the forehead, around the eyes and nasolabial folds, sagginess on the jowls and jawline, as well as cellulite on the stomach as well as inner thigh areas. Younger patients can also opt for this if they'd like a boost of collagen for better-defined contours.

However, Thermage FLX is not suitable for pregnant women due to the RF technology, and cannot be performed within four weeks before or after any anti-wrinkle injections.

“Patients should inform the doctor of any treatments, medication and other supplements that they are currently or previously undergoing or consuming. We can then identify possible contraindications to Thermage FLX if there are any. Do also inform us if you are pregnant or show any signs of pregnancy, such as morning sickness.”

Of course, the best way to find out if it is right for you is through a consultation with a qualified physician.

The Clifford Clinic is now open and seeing patients for dermatological and plastic surgery procedures, in accordance with guidelines from the Ministry of Health. Online consultations via video are also available for those who would like to find out more about aesthetic procedures.
