Marrying art and engineering, take hair care to a luxurious new level with the Dyson Supersonic 23.75-karat gold hair dryer

You’ve heard of the Midas touch, now there’s the Dyson touch. The innovative electronics maker is going for gold this month with the relaunch of its Dyson Supersonic hair dryer, now available in 23.75-karat gold, meaning you can give your hair the golden treatment at home.

Designed by James Dyson, the new hair dryer is gold-leafed using a traditional gilding method and is the first of its kind. Every cap is hand gilt in 23.75k gold.

“Gold is one of the most resilient materials in the world and has been used in design, sculpture and architecture for centuries,” said James Dyson, when talking about the new gold model.

“As an element, I’m fascinated by its properties. Like the engineering process we pride ourselves on, gilding is a true example of meticulous craftsmanship.”

This one-of-kind dryer was made using a meticulous process of training in the art of gilding and then applying what was learned, by hand, to the Dyson dryer.

Beneath the gold leaf is a red loop, which Dyson took from artwork, sculptures and other artefacts where gold leaf is applied traditionally. Better still, the red loop on the product will reveal some of its colour over time, giving each gold-leafed hair dryer a distinctive patina, depending on how you’ve used it.

Next, an adhesive was sprayed onto the surface of the red loop and repeatedly applied, for a smooth finish, before two layers of 23.75k-gold leaf from Florence, Italy, were painted by hand and carefully brushed on Dyson designers.

As for the inside, the golden dryer remains much like the original Dyson Supersonic. Powered by the patented digital motor, it’s fast drying and uses intelligent heat control to help protect hair against extreme heat damage. The dryer also gives you four heat settings, including a cool shot option, and three airflow settings.

Dyson engineers have also designed three colour-matched magnetic attachments—a styling concentrator, smoothing nozzle and diffuser—to further control airflow and to allow those with different hair types to achieve a range of styles.

Down to the mechanics, the 13-blade impeller spins at up to 110,000rpm, propelling 13 litres of air up to the amplifier every second.

A glass bead thermistor and microprocessor controls a double-stacked heating element.

Basically, the exit air temperature is measured 20 times per second (that’s a lot of thinking power), helping to protect hair and leave you feeling, well, golden.

Bye-bye breakage.
