aivee3.jpgFor all of us here in the Philippines, we are accustomed to the brutality of the tropical sun. As of late, its been shining in its full force and the humidity has been turned up. What to do when feeling sticky and oily? How should we modify our beauty regimen? When travelling to dry, cool, climates, the harsh cold air can strip skin of its much needed elements and nourishment.

Find out how to best nourish for yourself, no matter the weather or skin-type:

Philippine Tatler: What are your top tips for keeping our skin looking gorgeous this summer, for that matter, all year round for us here in the tropics? Basically, what is your advise for those who love staying under the sun?

Aivee Aguilar Teo: The sun’s rays especially during the summer are very strong and the sun’s heat can really take a toll on our skin, even when you don't think its that sunny outside. It is important to wear sunscreen daily as it decreases the damaging effects of UV rays. Sunscreen also helps in fighting premature ageing and hyperpigmentation. When choosing a sunscreen, SPF of at least 30 (with UVA /UVB protection) is important but don't be deceived by very high SPF numbers because incremental increase in sun protection with too high of an SPF is not that significant. For example, sun protection of SPF 60 to 100 is only a little higher than SPF 30 to 50. It's also essential to re-apply sunscreen at least every four hours if you're staying outdoors for long periods of time. Apart from sunscreens, wide brimmed hat and sunglasses are extra helpful in the battle against skin damage.

For everyone who loves staying under the sun, bear in mind to keep your skin and body hydrated during the summer by drinking lots of water and fresh juices to retain water in the body and flush out toxins as well. Water requirement during the summer is increased because of water loss due to excessive sweating. It is advisable to drink at least 12- 14 glasses of water a day. Keeping the skin moisturized will also help to prevent the skin from getting dehydrated & also helps prevent fine lines, wrinkles and premature aging.

PT: What products do you reccomend for people who love the sun?

AAT: My favourite products that I can recommend for people who love the sun would be, most importantly, a good sunscreen, oral carotenoids tablets (which are effective antioxidants) , hydrating moisturisers and lots of hydrogen water to neutralize the damaging free radicals from the harmful sun rays!

AAT: After sun exposure, I would advise to apply  a good moisturiser that contains aloe vera or soy to help soothe sun burn and dry skin. You may also apply cold, damp towel on the skin to help take some of the heat out. Showering or bathing with cold water is likewise recommended. Lastly, make sure to drink a lot of water after sun exposure to prevent dehydration.

PT: Should people with oily skin still use moisturiser at night?

AAT: For those with oily skin, they may still use moisturiser at night. In fact, using moisturisers may help balance oil production.  When you strip your skin of moisture hoping that it will lessen one's oiliness, on the contrary, it might give the opposite effect. The skin gets dehydrated which in turn might overcompensate causing it to produce more oil. However, when choosing a moisturiser for oily skin , It is important to look for water or gel based and oil free products to avoid further clogging of pores .

PT: What tip/s for people with oily skin?

AAT: Dealing with oily skin can really be stressful but with the use of proper cleansers and toners , unwanted sebum production can be reduced,  excessive oiliness can be controlled and acne can be prevented.  Washing the face twice a day is advisable. Look for cleansers and toners that contain  salicylic acid, glycolic acid & beta hydroxy acids. Exfoliate at least once or twice a week to help loosen and remove dirt and oil in the pores. Avoid using creams and heavy moisturisers. When choosing make up, pick those with gel /water or powder bases and non-comedogenic products. Eat less food with high glycemic index and cutting down on oily foods may also help to reduce oil production .

pexels-photo-286951.jpegPT: What tip/s for people with sensitive skin?

AAT: Regular products can easily aggravate sensitive skin because of the preservatives or harsh chemicals . When using a new product , itt is imperative that you test the product first by applying a small portion on the skin and wait for any reaction before applying on the whole face.  moisturisers are important part of skin care. This will help protect the skin from water loss and maintain a healthy barrier from environmental factors. Less is better with patients with sensitive skin so as not to overwhelm the skin with too many products. A gentle cleanser , moisturiser and sunscreen are generally enough for daily use. If one is extremely sensitive, it is advisable to consult a board certified dermatologist so that the appropriate creams can be prescribed.

PT: To exfoliate/ scrub or not to scrub? If so, why and how often?

AAT: Exfoliation can be useful to make skin look and feel better. The skin naturally sheds the top layer every 30 days and exfoliation or scrubbing helps accelerates what the skin does on its own. Exfoliation helps bring newer, healthier skin cells to the surface . These younger cells hold water better and allow moisturisers to penetrate better thus improving skin quality, hyperpigmentation or uneven skin time due to sun damage . You can exfoliate once or twice a week but it is best to do it gently and always moisturize after. Do not use anything overly abrasive to your face and if you are using a chemical exfoliant but have sensitive skin, please check with your dermatologist about which product would be suitable for you .

aivee2.jpgPT: Are serums necessary? Why or why not.

AAT: Serums are necessary because it is made up of smaller molecules that can penetrate deeper into the skin and deliver a very high concentration of active ingredients. This will give better results for skin hydration & rejuvenation .

PT:  Skin products you cannot live without

AAT: Skin products that are must haves for me are as follows : Retinoids which are good for anti-ageing as they boost collagen , exfoliate the skin and  prevent lines & wrinkles. Alpha hydroxy acids which help improve skin texture and pore reduction. moisturisers rich in peptides & ceramides to keep my skin hydrated and supple. Vitamin C serum which is a powerful anti-oxidant that helps lighten the skin & even out skin tone. And lastly, a good sunblock foundation that doubles up as my daily concealer.
