Apply and reapply sunscreen

Choose a sunscreen with at least SPF 30 or above and that's labelled water-resistant and ‘broad spectrum’, which means that it targets both long wave ultraviolet A (UVA) and short wave ultraviolet B (UVB) sunrays.

Apply a palmful or two tablespoons of sunscreen to exposed skin 15 to 30 minutes before sun exposure and reapply every two hours or straight after water activity. For make-up wearers, the routine should be: moisturiser first; sunscreen second; and make-up last.

Stay in the shade

Beach umbrellas, wide-brimmed hats, long-sleeved clothing and one-piece swimsuits offer more sun protection and should be sought out in addition to sunscreen. Stay indoors between 10 o’clock to 4 o’clock when the sun’s rays are at their strongest.

Don’t forget to protect your eyes and lips

Choose lip balms with SPF because skin on the lips are thin, thus prone to sunburn and skin cancers. It's also important to choose sunglasses with UV protection to protect the skin around the eyes and reduce the risk of early cataracts.

Remember to moisturise

In the summer, light moisturisers such as serums, gels or lotions, which have higher water concentration, are better than creams, oils or ointments, which have higher oil concentration.

The latter can provoke acne breakouts so avoid products with a long list of ingredients or fragrances that can irritate the skin. The simpler the product, the better.

Avoid tanning beds

Avoid the temptation to pre-tan before vacations, as tanning beds or lamps emit UVA and some UVB that leads to premature skin ageing. They can also increase your risk of skin cancer.
