The brain behind Aesop shares her tips on how to maintain the skin in optimum health and why she is so passionate about exfoliants and masques

Globally loved skincare brand Aesop is well known to have transformed and revolutionised our bathrooms—both personal ones and even those in chic restaurants and bars. From its iconic amber glass bottles to sensorial botanical products, the Melbourne-born label has achieved cult status amongst its biggest fans and in the realm of beauty. And the woman responsible for the brand since its inception in 1987 is its co-founder Suzanne Santos.

Together with Aesop founder, Dennis Paphitis, Santos has overseen the brand's growth beyond Australia and is also involved in training staff as well as cultivating customer relationships.

As a brand, Aesop embraces a seasonal approach to skincare and emphasises "the need to change regimens with shifts in climatic conditions" along with the belief that proper routines are key to maintaining untroubled skin all year long.

This in itself piqued our curiosity on how the brain behind one of the most popular beauty brands in the world goes about taking care of her skin on a daily basis.

We ask Santos to share her thoughts on skincare as well as why Aesop steers away from products trends.

How long do you typically spend on your skincare routine? What is your skincare routine like for day and night time?

SS: In the morning, in complement to gentle cleansing, I would suggest Lucent Facial Concentrate. It is light, barely there, but holds potent benefits. Almost all skin types will benefit greatly from the vitamins delivered by just one pipette of this exceptional serum; if your skin is normal, dry or dehydrated, it can function as a vitamin-rich preface to your chosen moisturiser, and significantly boost hydration. In hot and humid conditions, it offers excellent nourishment and hydration without encumbering the skin.

In the evening, I would unreservedly recommend Fabulous Face Oil, for the sense of wellbeing it confers in addition to its hydrating, decongesting and balancing properties. The lightweight texture and smooth, near-matte finish make it a pleasure to experience on the skin; and the aromatic impression of this product is like no other—essential oils of Ylang Ylang and Jasmine, particularly, evoke a sense of warm, languid evenings and gardens in full bloom. Only a few drops are needed to effect an elevated mood while delivering multiple benefits to the skin. It’s a delightful precursor to sound sleep.

When did you start paying extra attention to your skin?

SS: Long before Aesop, I was passionate about exfoliants and masques. The tipping point for treatments came in my late 20s, when along with regular acupuncture, weekly yoga and daily exercise the desire to create more effort emerged. Now my mind understands how effortless it is to apply more than just a moisturiser and how fabulous the results can be, for seconds of application time.

What’s a skincare product you can’t live without?

SS: In the midst of the Australian winter, I am favouring Elemental Facial Barrier Cream for its protective properties and superlative emollience. My day almost always begins with a long, brisk walk, and there is no more effective product for shielding my skin from chill air and blustery winds. In tandem, I am using Seeking Silence Facial Hydrator—a formulation we created specifically to address the visible and non-visible manifestations of sensitive skin, and skin prone to sensitivities. This is a product to which I turn whenever my skin is irritated, assured that it will be swiftly calmed and balanced as well as thoroughly hydrated.

What’s the most important skincare step to you?

SS: We, at Aesop, believe in an uncomplicated approach to skincare, focusing on the health of the skin. We advocate the daily use of our formulations as part of a healthy, balanced lifestyle that includes a nutritious diet, daily exercise and a moderate intake of red wine.

We ignore product trends and industry conventions by formulating products with a clearly identified purpose, such as our antioxidant-rich Parsley Seed range, developed in response to the needs of urban-dwellers whose skin is exposed to environmental stressors daily.

We emphasise the efficacy of twice-daily cleansing, toning and moisturising, along with regular deep-cleansing and facial treatments. We advocate a generous application of our hydrating products and encourage blending—for example, of exfoliating products and masques—for a complete, optimal regimen.

Is skincare the new self-care? What are your thoughts on this?

SS: One obvious positive impact I have noticed that was brought by Covid-19 is that people used to do their skincare rituals as quick as possible, without giving much thoughts about the products they applied. But now, we are offered the luxury to pause and look at our beauty cabinet to consider what we purchased, the purpose behind each product and its ingredients.

I personally welcome the shift in demand for more time to nurture and celebrate oneself. We have always encouraged our customers to use each product with a sense of purpose and to embrace ageing and inclusion. We promote the health and wellness of skin through our formulations, and regard promises of retaining or regaining youthful-looking skin as patently false. We view ageing as a dignified process, believing the marks of its progress should be embraced rather than obscured.

What is one piece of skincare advice that you live by?

SS: To maintain the skin in optimum health, we advocate twice-daily cleansing complemented by regular exfoliation and the use of a deep-cleansing masque. The skin on the face is more delicate than that of the rest of the body; further, it is exposed to our environs constantly. For both these reasons, we need to treat it with care and respect; and the breadth of our cleansing range is a testament to the importance we place upon this simple everyday act. A gentle but disciplined approach helps to purify the skin and maintain its natural balance.

What is the best piece of skincare advice that you have ever gotten and from whom?

SS: Pursuing skincare alone without supporting with great decisions around food and lifestyle is an utter waste of time. The results of cutting corners with your physical and mental health will catch up quickly. Feeling fantastic is visible and tangibly supports your skin. I don’t remember from whom this came, however, I grew up in a home where food mattered as did exercise and reading. The foundation of my life was led this way, as was the self-responsibility that was promoted.

What would you say to anyone who is keen on skincare (or wants to pay more attention to his or her skin) but doesn’t know where to start?

SS: What I would say to those who aren’t sure where to start is: don’t be afraid of investing in your skin; a regimen that includes five seconds’ cleansing morning and evening will make a significant, positive difference to its health and appearance, both here and now and for years to come.

When discussing skincare at Aesop, we focus primarily on optimising the skin’s health by addressing its current condition and identifying products that will unequivocally meet its needs. And we speak not to age or gender, but to the more pertinent matter of how your skin feels and behaves in response to environmental conditions, hormonal fluctuations, your diet, how well you sleep, and other influential factors. In addition, we advocate a healthy, balanced lifestyle as a vital corollary if the products you apply topically are to be truly effective.
