The founder and CEO shares when and how his relationship with skincare began

Japanese skincare brands have long been revered for creating products using high-quality ingredients. These products are generally fuss-free and easy to use to benefit consumers, especially those new to skincare. And it’s no different for homegrown skincare brand Re:erth, which focuses on producing effective products that do not complicate daily routines.

What sets the brand apart from others is its approach in developing product formulations; Re:erth’s formulations not only supplement our skin deficiencies to only address symptoms such as congestion or dehydration but its products also aid the skin to return to its optimal condition as a long-term solution.

“Re:erth was founded with the belief that healthy skin is beautiful skin. Every product created is a result of dedication to quality, simplicity, and sustainability,” says founder and chief executive Shinji Yamasaki.

After completing his studies in both Boston and London as well as exploring careers in finance, insurance and medical devices, Yamasaki decided to join his family’s business which owns several distributorships for international health and beauty brands. From this, Re:erth was born. Along with his team, Yamasaki used ingredients backed by studies from universities like Kindai University and Oxford University to develop Re:erth’s products which are all made in Japan. The overall aim was simple: to create nature-derived, efficacious and minimalistic skincare products to achieve healthy, “mochi”-like skin.

Re:erth’s products also feature proprietary ingredients including Japanese White Turmeric, which is grown only on the brand’s farms in the Kyushu region of Japan. Japanese White Turmeric and Japanese Spring Turmeric are well-known healing botanicals. Farmers and their community for centuries have enjoyed the tradition of turmeric tea, and have attributed their physical strength, mental clarity, strong immune system, and longevity to this simple age-old botanical ritual.

After decades of extensive research conducted by Professor Komai, then Head of Agriculture at Kindai University, the Japanese White Turmeric root and leaf extract and the Japanese Spring Turmeric leaf extract were proven to have the ability to significantly restore skin health. One of the products that contains Japanese White Turmeric and Japanese Spring Turmeric extracts is the bestselling Multi Targeted Elixir, a lightweight high-potency serum designed to rejuvenate and nourish the skin; the result is soft, even, luminous skin with a youthful firmness and healthy glow.

In 2021, a global survey was conducted amongst the RREC members and in the Health and Wellness category, Re:erth was frequently mentioned as a brand that the respondents liked and used. Today, the brand counts loyal customers from 33 countries and counting since its inception five years ago. This year, the brand seeks to continue its efforts on sustainability while growing its reach internationally. To commemorate this, the brand also launched 'A Healing Garden', a carefully curated limited-edition set of the brand’s core skincare products.

Below, we ask Yamasaki to share his best skincare tips and daily skincare regime.

1. How long do you typically spend on your skincare routine?

My standard routine is usually very short, maybe a maximum of 5 minutes, including washing my face. Just wash my face, and use our Multi-Targeted Elixir. However, recently I’ve also started using our Smoothing Eye Cream, and on occasion will use the Hydrating Gel Moisturizer.

2. What is your skincare routine like for the day and night?

My routine is exactly the same day and night.

1)     Wash my face (I use our Clarifying Cleanser, which is gentle, pH balanced, yet cleanses very well).

2)     Use our Multi-Targeted Elixir, to keep my skin healthy, and provide the types of ingredients and compounds that helps the skin stay its optimum self.

That’s usually it for my daily skincare routine, but on occasion, I may use our Smoothing Eye Cream, particularly when I feel my under eye areas may be a bit puffy, and on days I shave, I use our Barrier Control to keep inflammation and potential breakouts in check.

4. What was the last skincare product that you bought?

Frankly, I can’t recall the last skincare product I bought to use myself as it's been such a long time!

5. Are there any new skincare trends that you’re excited to try?

I believe that long-term skincare shouldn’t (and usually isn’t) trend based. I use products that work for me, and give me the type of results I want, so staying consistent with them is what I find, is key.

6. When did you start paying extra attention to your skin?

Skincare has been a family business, so I was immersed in it for all of my life. Admittedly, I only really started paying extra attention to it both from a business perspective and it becoming something I paid more attention to (for myself) starting in my 30s, I was very cognisant of it at a very early age. The first time I bought skincare products to use was in my second year in high school.

7. What’s one skincare must-have you’ve “influenced” others to purchase?

Definitely our Multi-Targeted Elixir. Not only is it the hero product for Re:erth, it's the one key product in my own skincare routine, and I strongly believe that there isn’t anything else like it out in the market. It’s designed to work together with your skin to help it become the most optimal version of itself and become healthier!

8. What’s a skincare product you can’t live without?

Again, I’d have to say our Multi-Targeted Elixir. Our customers call it “healthy skin in a bottle” for a reason. With consistent use of this one product, the skin becomes its best version of itself, and really, once you notice that you have healthy skin, you stop feeling the need to use any other products.

9. What’s the most important skincare step to you?

Well, I think that’s a really tricky one to answer, as I feel that it depends on factors like goal (what you want), environment, etc. but if I had to choose, probably cleansing. Of course, it's important to remove the day's dust, grime, and any other compounds that have accumulated on your skin throughout the day, but most importantly, using a proper cleanser should optimally prepare your skin to receive all the actives from your proceeding skincare products.

10. Where and what is your go-to facial?

I don’t go to facials, but I do advise people not to do too many scrubs/peels, particularly in a place like Singapore, as it will increase your chances of discolouration of the skin and uneven skin tones.

11. Is skincare the new self-care? What are your thoughts on this?

I think that all depends on the person. Obviously, as in the name, skincare would naturally be a part of self-care as you're taking care of your skin. Personally, in the mornings my skincare routine has become a moment for me to get my gears going and take on the day, so while I am taking care of my skin, I’m also preparing my mental state to challenge the day head-on.

12. What is one piece of skincare advice that you live by?

Consistency is key! It takes time to achieve good, real results. Inconsistent use, as well as switching products, routines, and using trendy products often, will not give you good results.

13. What is your beauty tool of choice?

My hands! I don’t use any beauty tools. If a product is well formulated, it should have the ability to give you the desired results, no gimmicks.

14. What is the most unique beauty treatment you tried overseas?

Beauty treatments aren’t really something that I do, so unfortunately I haven’t done anything very unique. That being said, one of the things I love about the skincare industry is that it's constantly changing. New ingredients and technologies are coming out all the time, and one of the best things about going to conventions (whether for finished products or for ingredients), is that you never know what you might find!

15. Have you tried out aesthetic treatments? Why or why not?

As a section of our business in Japan, we also deal in medical devices and products intended to be used by aesthetic dermatologists and plastic surgeons. In the process of researching products and devices I have tried and experienced (read: test subject here) several aesthetic treatments from dermal PRP injections, to ultrasound cavitation. However, other than for testing/experience purposes (you have to know what your products feel like if you want to sell it), I have not undergone any treatments.
