She also reveals why it is important to have a good skincare regimen established from a young age

For those familiar with French beauty brands, the name Caudalie should instantly ring a bell. Step into any pharmacy in France and this is one skincare label that stands out among the rest. And luckily for us, it is also available here in Singapore.

Founded by husband and wife duo, Mathilde and Bertrand Thomas, the sustainable beauty brand was created after the couple met Dr Joseph Vercauteren, the world’s leading expert on grape and grapevine polyphenols. Upon visiting the vineyard, Dr Vercauteren noticed the leftover grape skins and seeds and explained that the grape polyphenols had extraordinary anti-oxidant power. From that experience, Caudalie was created in 1995.

Since the creation of the brand, its founders have always favoured natural and environmentally friendly active ingredients. Caudalie products do not contain any parabens, phthalates, Phenoxyethanol, colourants, mineral oils, and animal-derived ingredients. Over the years, the beauty brand has gained fans from all over the world and created cult products such as the iconic Vinoperfect Radiance Serum (the only product that saved this writer's skin after being ravaged by acne during her university days in harsh Western New York weather).

Below, we spoke to co-founder Mathilde to find out her everyday skincare routine and the best beauty tips she grew up learning from her mother and grandmother.

How long do you typically spend on your skincare routine?

Mathilde Thomas (MT): The key for me is keeping it simple, with an emphasis on cleansing your skin thoroughly and using the best skincare rather than makeup.

What is your skincare routine like for the day?

MT: In the morning, I double-cleanse my skin by combining a Makeup Removing Cleansing Oil, with Vinoclean Instant Foaming Cleanser. Right after, I always love to spray my Caudalie Beauty Elixir before using my Caudalie Vinoperfect Concentrated Brightening Essence, followed by a serum depending on the season, which can either be hydrating, brightening or firming. Right now, I am loving my Caudalie Vinoperfect Radiance Serum Complexion Correcting. For my eyes, I use Caudalie Resveratrol Lift Eye Gel as it specifically targets puffiness, fine lines and wrinkles so eyes look perfectly filtered and soft.

What is your skincare routine for the night?

MT: At night, I always remove my make-up and clean my skin. Once a week, I like to use Vinoperfect Glycolic Peel for an extra boost of radiance. Then I go to sleep with the Resveratrol Lift Night Infusion Cream. Et voila!

What was the last skincare product that you bought?

MT: I was travelling in Germany recently and bought some new anti-ageing products to try. I love to try out different textures.

Are there any new skincare trends that you’re excited to try?

MT: I am always obsessed to find and try the best anti-ageing skincare solution.

When did you start paying extra attention to your skin?

MT: Growing up, my grandmother taught me homemade skincare recipes with natural ingredients and at an early age taught me the importance of antioxidant-rich skincare so I guess I started to pay attention to my skin from a very young age.

What’s one skincare must-have you’ve “influenced” others to purchase?

MT: Most definitely Vinoperfect Radiance Serum. It’s one of the products I am the proudest of. It’s very versatile, it can be used in many ways, and it just works.

What’s a skincare product you can’t live without?

MT: It is hard to select, but if I had to choose, my desert island product, it would be Beauty Elixir.

What’s the most important skincare step to you?

MT: Cleansing is the most important step in your beauty ritual. Our dermis is exposed to different environmental factors such as pollution and air conditioning, all of which contribute to irritate our skin and clog our pores and if they aren't washed away properly, they could potentially contribute to ageing, pigmentation and breakouts.

Where and what is your go-to facial?

MT: I would go to the Spa at Les Sources de Caudalie in Bordeaux. My favourite facial is the Vinoperfect brightening facial with hot and cold stones. I love its very long manual massage, its slow pace and the ritual of the protocol is beautiful. It leaves your skin glowy and dewy.

Is skincare the new self-care? What are your thoughts on this?

MT: Self-care has never been as relevant as it is today, and skincare plays a big part in feeling confident and positive about yourself. It is important to use a good skincare regimen when you are young by moisturising daily to fight oxidants, cleanse morning and night, always use sunscreen, and educate yourself about ingredients that works best for your skin type. What is also important for your health and for your skin is to have a balanced diet that’s rich in vegetables, fruits and nuts to bring vitamins and minerals to the skin. Drink lots of green tea every day and a glass or two of red wine loaded with antioxidants during dinner.

What is one piece of skincare advice that you live by?

MT: My mother taught me never go to bed without removing my makeup, to always protect my skin from the sun, eat healthy and drink a lot of water.

Have you tried out aesthetic treatments? Why or why not?

MT: I would like to try those new LED machines that boost your collagen and elastin.

What’s one beauty treatment you tried overseas that left a lasting impression?

MT: I am lucky enough to have Spas all around the world, so, yes, I try the beauty treatments and I have my favourites. What I love to do is palper rouler, facial massages from our lifting treatment called Resveratrol Lift. It’s my favourite among the list of facials that we propose in our Spas.

What’s your beauty tool of choice? If none, why?

MT: I don’t really use any beauty tool. I have tried mechanical cleansing with brushes but felt that it was too harsh for my skin. Instead, you should simply choose the right skincare, effective products which contains skin-changing, problem-solvers molecules, in clean formulas.
