The trailblazer in facial cleansing brushes, Clarisonic, is closing down next month and discontinuing the production of its replacement brush heads. We take a closer look at five other facial cleansing and exfoliating devices that are available for us to try
If you haven't heard by now, Clarisonic, the OG facial cleansing device, will be shutting down effective from September 30 this year. A trailblazer for beauty devices in its category, Clarisonic's devices—with its oscillating brush heads—transformed skincare for many at home, with famous fans including Cate Blanchett, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, and Oprah touting its prowess in facial cleansing and massage in the early days. However, as skincare trends steer towards nurturing your skin rather than over-exfoliation, Clarisonic failed to keep up with its consumers, falling behind its younger competitors instead.
A representative from L’Oreal, which acquired Clarisonic in 2011, told WWD: “This difficult decision was made so that L’Oréal can focus its attention on its other core business offerings.”
Clarisonic announced its closure via its social media channels on July 15, offering a storewide 50 per cent discount while supplies last. Most of its devices and device attachments have since been sold out, which means existing Clarisonic users may face a problem replacing their brush heads—recommended to be changed every three months after September.
But don't worry, we've scoured Clarisonic's competitors to scope out the best facial cleansing brushes to replace it. These are some cleansing devices that you should try:
1. LG Pra.L Dual Cleanser
LG Pra.L Dual Cleanser offers a solution for all skin types and needs. There are two brush options for two different modes: a silicone brush for gentle daily cleansing and a fine fibre bristle brush for deep cleansing, as well as two levels of cleansing: a 70-second cleanse and a 120-second cleanse.
The device uses micro-vibrations to thoroughly clean your skin of dirt, oil, and grime, which helps to reduce dead skin cells, blackheads, and improve the appearance of pores. The best part? The Dual Cleanser is completely waterproof (with an IPX7² rating) so you can simply use it in the shower with your favourite facial cleanser. It also comes with a docking cradle that sanitises the brush with UV light when not in use—which scores major points for ease of cleaning and hygiene.
2. Foreo Luna 3
The first skincare tool of its kind when it debuted with silicone bristles in 2013, the Foreo Luna is now in its third generation. Boasting silicone bristles that are 30 per cent longer and 25 per cent softer than its predecessor, Luna 3 ensures a deeper and gentler cleanse with its eco-friendly and long-lasting brush head.
The Luna 3 utilises Foreo’s patented T-Sonic pulsations in 16 different intensities to remove 99.5 per cent of dirt and oil in just one minute. There’s also a device designed for every skin type—whether you have normal, combination or sensitive skin.
3. ReFa Clear Cleansing Brush
Combining sonic vibrations and ion cleansing, the ReFa Clear Cleansing Brush helps to surface negatively charged dirt, grime and dead skin cells trapped within the pores, dislodging stubborn impurities without damaging the skin’s surface or enlarging pores. The ReFa Clear Cleansing Brush comes in three modes—Soft, a gentle one-minute cleanse for the morning; Clean, a one-minute cleanse to remove grime and residual makeup at the end of the day; and Deep, a 30-second intensive cleanse best for clearing oily skin and clogged pores.
Boasting a Kumanofude brush head—a high-quality artisanal brush handmade in Japan—the ultra-fine bristle tips in varying lengths conform to the uneven surface of the face for gentle and comfortable cleansing.
4. PMD Clean Pro RQ
Similar to Foreo, the PMD Clean range utilises a hygienic silicone brush head that is odour-resistant, antibacterial, hypoallergenic and waterproof. PMD’s SonicGlow technology generates 7,000 vibrations per minute to break down dirt and oil that trapped within the pores, while also lifting, firming and toning the skin.
The PMD Clean Pro RQ offers four cleansing modes—Gentle Vibration and Intense Vibration for cleansing, and Gentle Pulsation and Intense Pulsation for anti-ageing. The latter two are used with the rose quartz back of the PMD Clean Pro RQ, which features PMD’s ActiveWarmth technology to improve absorption of your skincare products. Rose quartz stone also offers benefits like reducing inflammation and tension.
5. Braun FaceSpa Pro 912
If you need more than just a facial cleansing brush, the Braun FaceSpa Pro is the device that does it all. Touted as the world's first three-in-one facial epilation, cleansing and skin toning device, this nifty gadget is a one-stop solution to maintaining your complexion between spa visits.
Keep facial hair in check with the slim epilator head, which features ten micro-openings and 200 movements per second for fast and precise hair removal. A MicroVibration head delivers 25 micro-vibrations per second, working your serum or face creams into your skin and toning up your complexion. Of course, there's also the oscillating facial cleansing brush for daily cleansing—Braun offers an extra gentle brush head that is dermatologist-tested for sensitive skin.
