Travel has always served as a creative reset and inspiration for many, and it’s no different when it comes to the world of fragrances. Smell is one of the strongest senses we relate to a place and beauty brands have mastered the art of recreating the essence of a location in a bottle.

Case in point: Les Eaux de Chanel, which takes inspiration from destinations that Gabrielle Chanel loved, from Venice To Biarritz. This month, they’ve released the fresh and woody Paris—Édimbourg, a sophisticated scent that replicates “the fragrance of a tweed jacket borrowed from men’s wardrobe”. Perhaps this is a good one to spray when you're pining for mild summers in Scotland. 

Tom Ford Beauty is another brand that is bottling up a very special destination—the glamourous Italian Riviera in this case—in its new Mediterranean Citrus collection. While lucky travellers would be able to enjoy sailing on the glistening Tyrrhenian Sea and the taste of a ripe, juicy Amalfi lemon, you can imagine yourself there with Tom Ford’s five private blend fragrances embodying the aura of the stunning coastal towns of Portofino, Amalfi, and Positano.

Exotic destinations aside, luxury hotels have also inspired fragrance creations and the legendary Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc is one of them.

From the Windsors to the Kennedys, the most influential celebrities, tycoons, and aristocrats have all stayed at this glamorous icon of the French Riviera—simply called “Le Cap” by its loyal patrons. It celebrated a milestone of 150 years in 2020 and Maison Christian Dior’s Perfumer-Creator François Demachy honours the grand dame with its newest fragrance, Eden-Roc.

“I composed Eden-Roc by imagining myself arriving at the hotel by sea. The salt, sun, pale rocks, and luxuriant vegetation all influenced me. This fragrance is a scented reflection of Cap d’Antibes exceptional location. A perfume comes to life when it is worn; a place when it is lived in. So let us wish a very long life to the Eden-Roc,” shared Demachy in a statement.

More and more, hotel brands themselves are crafting their own beauty and fragrance brands based on their properties. After launching its own skincare and wellness supplements line, Aman Hotels and Resorts is actively expanding into the fragrances realm with an initial collection released in December 2020. Its latest addition of fine fragrances takes cues from its flagship city hotel, Aman Tokyo, and the stylish Utah desert retreat, Amangiri.

Getting there may be a challenge this year given the pandemic but that doesn't mean you can’t get a whiff of these ever-popular hotels. Based on the urban resort that is Aman Tokyo is Haru—a fresh and energising fragrance where delicate floral layers combine with soft apricot and green tea.

Sei, on the other hand, evokes the serenity of nightfall in Utah’s vast desert where Amangiri is located. Featuring pine needles, juniper, sage, and lavender, this earthy and woody scent hopefully brings you to the otherworldly setting of Amangiri—that is, until we can travel freely again.
