After mother-daughter duo Marion Caunter and Tiong Min Chor made a big splash during our recent shoot with La Mer at Banyan Tree Kuala Lumpur, they divulged some beauty tips that they have both taught and subsequently, learned from each other.

Marion, what are some of the beauty tips that your mum has shared with you?

"I think my mum has taught me, most importantly in life, inner beauty. I would like to think that I am this strong, independent, feisty person because of my mum. She taught me to feel good about myself from within, be confident with who I am, to take on challenges, and not to get too stressed about the little things. She’s always reminding my sisters and me to not sweat the small stuff – to just take it on! – and to be our own person. I think that is the biggest beauty tip that my mum has passed down to me."

And Min, what has Marion taught you in return, with regards to beauty?

"I’m not as vain as my daughters! [laughs] And you know, in the past, I would usually go to bed without taking off my makeup. And Marion would tell me, 'Mum, that’s a big no-no, you’ve got to clean your face!' So now, I do it consistently. That’s the biggest tip they’ve given me. Oh, they also advise me to keep fit at my age. Marion is a very very good daughter; she sent me to a gym class with a trainer. I go twice a week, and I’m quite toned now, I think! [laughs]."

What’s that one thing you have in common with your mum when it comes to beauty routines?

Marion: "I only recently started going for regular facials. I don’t think my mum has ever done facials at all! Until she was about 50, I told her she cannot sleep with makeup, and that she needed to use creams on her face before going to bed."

Min Chor: "One thing that we have in common is that I always tell them to dress up properly whenever they go out. You don’t know who you’re going to meet – even at the wet market! I used to be a teacher, and when some of my students see me out in public, I wouldn’t want them to say, “Oh teacher, yesterday I saw you and you were so badly dressed!” No way. So I always make sure we dress up properly."

Marion: "Absolutely 100% agree that that was what I wanted to answer to that question. My memory of my mum when I was growing up was that she was always presentable when she left the house. And it didn’t matter where she was going: the grocery store down the street – or anywhere, really – there was always a little bit of lipstick, hair would be done up and she would have proper clothes on. And that’s my image of my mum, always.

"She was a teacher, so I knew it was about meeting students at unexpected moments and not looking like a mess (a hot mess)! So that’s me now … I’m always so presentable, and I could be flying off at an ungodly hour and be meeting friends and they’d ask, “How do you look like this?"

I'd say that it honestly took me all of 5 minutes to look like this. I don’t spend too much time on hair and makeup. However, you could always make time to make yourself look presentable. I tell these to young girls: You never know who you’re going to meet. It could be your future husband, your future employer, and you would honestly leave an impression if you look good! You don’t have to look dolled up to perfection … you just have to look decent."

Beauty is

Marion: "Beauty is being comfortable in your own skin. Accepting your flaws, your weaknesses… and being okay with the fact that you have all these flaws and weaknesses. Once you’re okay with that, you can then start working on yourself. That, to me, is beauty."

Min Chor: "Beauty is being yourself. My children can’t believe how confident I am, you know? I could be with anyone and I would still be myself. I would laugh, joke and say whatever I want. Not something ridiculous, of course, but I’d still be myself!"

Crème de la Mer is a legendary skincare product that owes its history to physicist Dr Max Huber, who had invented the Miracle Broth in the 1950s, in a bid to heal a lab accident that had left serious burns on his face. He began to ferment the nutrient-rich Giant sea kelp harvested in protected waters with other natural ingredients.

After 12 years and 6,000 experiments, the Miracle Broth™ was concocted. Filled with highly active natural ingredients such as nutrient-rich algae, protective antioxidant extracts and semi-precious stones, each hand-filled jar is filled within eight hours of formula completion to suspend its extraordinary emulsion. It has the power to transform the skin – it aims to moisturise, regenerate, soothe, smooth, and enhance radiance.

How to use:

To activate the Miracle Broth™, warm between your fingers until it becomes translucent to the eye. Press gently onto cleansed face and neck, morning and night. Pair with your daily La Mer regimen, such as the The Revitalizing Hydrating Serum and The Eye Balm Intense.
