New trends reshaping the beauty industry

Microbiome skincare has swiftly become one of the most talked-about developments in beauty. The trend has gained momentum as consumers become more attuned to the link between a healthy microbiome and radiant skin. In the US, nearly 50 million Americans are struggling with skin concerns such as acne, continuing to intensify the desire for effective, lasting solutions.

The rising appeal of personalised skincare has also helped fuel the microbiome movement. Consumers are increasingly drawn to formulas tailored to their individual skin microbiome, giving rise to a clear demand for products rooted in natural ingredients and cutting-edge biotechnology. Recent data reveals that more than 40 per cent of consumers now actively seek out skin microbiome-friendly formulations. According to Grand View Research, the global microbiome skincare market was valued at $405.6 million in 2023 and is forecast to reach $835.2 million by 2030—a striking growth rate of 11.4 per cent annually, reflecting heightened interest in the field.

Tapping into this momentum, top-tier brands have poured investment into microbiome research and innovation. In January 2023, American skincare label Symbiome joined forces with biotechnology firm Sequential Skin to apply microbiome analysis in formulating bespoke products. Later that year, L’Oréal Group finalised its acquisition of Lactobio, a Danish biotech company specialising in probiotics and microorganisms for skin and hair care. Most recently, in September 2024, Unilever unveiled the POND'S SKIN INSTITUTE Microbiome Analyser, a device capable of assessing one’s skin microbiome within 60 minutes and delivering tailored skincare recommendations.

Three core “weapons”

At the heart of this movement is the idea that microbiome-focused skincare offers a gentle yet effective way to restore the skin’s own balance. The approach revolves around three primary types of ingredients: prebiotics, probiotics, and postbiotics. Prebiotics, such as inulin, rhamnose and glucomannan, nourish beneficial microorganisms. Probiotics are live bacterial strains often derived from fermented foods like kombucha and kefir that help foster healthy skin flora.

Yet incorporating probiotics into cosmetics poses challenges, particularly in terms of maintaining optimal storage conditions. In contrast, postbiotics, by-products of beneficial bacteria such as enzymes, peptides and organic acids, not only calm irritated skin but also promote cellular renewal and strengthen the skin’s natural defences. This method delivers visible results: reduced acne and redness, a softer, more supple complexion, and crucially, suitability for a variety of skin types, including oily skin, due to its ability to regulate sebum and maintain hydration.
