Lawrence Siow, Asia Pacific president at Merz Aesthetics, highlights the latest trends and innovations in the cutting edge field of medical aesthetics
Once considered niche or a “beauty secret”, non-invasive or minimally invasive medical aesthetics treatments have now become mainstream, with men and women across a wide range of age groups seeking out such procedures. This is largely due to the global demand for such treatments as more people embrace the convenience and results that these procedures provide.
As an increasing number of happy individuals can attest to, non-invasive “tweakments” are increasingly seen as a way to refresh one’s appearance as part of a self-care regimen. These include energy-based devices to lift and tighten sagging skin, botulinum toxin injections to reduce the appearance of fine lines, and dermal fillers to address volume loss and smooth out facial wrinkles and folds.
Merz Aesthetics' state-of-the-art product portfolio ranges from Xeomin (incobotulinumtoxinA), a uniquely purified neurotoxin that is free from unnecessary proteins; to the popular Ultherapy, the only FDA-cleared ultrasound energy-based skin lifting and tightening device with real-time visualization; to Radiesse, a calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHA)-based filler, and Belotero, a range of hyaluronic acid-based fillers with good skin integration.
Lawrence Siow, Asia Pacific president of Merz Aesthetics, says, “Rather than ‘augmenting’, we believe it’s important to enhance patients’ unique features, allowing them to achieve natural looking results.”
Patients are on the lookout for safe and natural looking results with minimal to no downtime, he elaborates. “In addition to that, they are also looking into ways of improving overall skin quality such as skin firmness, skin surface evenness, skin glow and skin tone evenness,” says Siow.
Across Asia Pacific, there is also a trend of younger patients seeking aesthetic treatments in order to keep their appearance fresh and radiant. This includes a growing number of male patients, as mindsets are rapidly changing that medical aesthetics is not restricted to females only.

Can you give us an introduction to Merz Aesthetics’ evolution and role in the beauty industry, and how your award-winning portfolio of products are enabling aesthetics professionals to provide quality services?
Merz has been a successful specialty healthcare company for more than 110 years. Founded in 1908 in Frankfurt, Germany by Friedrich Merz, we are proud to still be owned by the fourth-generation of the Merz family. As a company with a long history, Merz has held different focus areas over the years. From dental products to Alzheimer disease breakthroughs, we have successfully reinvented ourselves more than once since our founding, but medical aesthetics remained in our core.
In 2020, Merz reorganized into three distinct customer-focused businesses. In this new structure, all functions and aspects of global Merz Aesthetics business became solely focused on serving the unique needs of medical aesthetics customers. Merz Aesthetics is now the largest business solely dedicated to medical aesthetics.
Not all medical aesthetics businesses are built the same and what makes Merz Aesthetics stand out is our ability to be fast and agile in responding to the needs of our customers as an independently run business. Throughout our history, we have applied the principles of innovation, commitment, and trust to all our interactions with healthcare professionals to create lasting partnerships.
Our award-winning portfolio of products enable healthcare professionals to fuel confidence in people by providing personalised treatments that enhance their unique features and empower them to become the best versions of themselves.
Healthcare professionals have reported an unparalleled demand for ‘tweakments’ over the last few years. How would you describe the importance of ‘refreshing’ vs ‘augmenting’, and how does Merz Aesthetics’ suite of products achieve this?
The medical aesthetics industry was previously stereotyped as catering predominantly to the needs of the wealthy and vain. However, it is now being seen more broadly as part of individual’s self-care, a way to ‘refresh’ your look. Rather than ‘augmenting,’ we believe it’s important to ‘enhance’ patients’ unique features, allowing them to achieve natural looking results.
Merz Aesthetics portfolio of products enable healthcare professionals to provide hyper-personalised treatment plans that are tailored to each patient’s needs and not determined by societal standards of beauty.

What are the risks one should be aware of when it comes to fillers?
The specifics may vary based on the individual and the treatment option, but I would advise readers to talk to their doctor to discuss about any potential side effects or post-treatment reactions.
In addition, I would also advise to be wary of counterfeit or fake filler products out there as there’s been some rising concerns around them.
What are some of the most common misconceptions around facial fillers?
The most common misconception around facial fillers is that the outcomes might look ‘fake’ or ‘not natural’. The truth is, when the right treatment is administered properly by a skilled healthcare professional, facial fillers can bring safe and natural looking results.
