From Balmain’s perfume-bottle couture to Chanel’s blush-inspired watches and Loewe’s lipstick heels, makeup fashion turns lipsticks, blush, and scent into lasting design.
For decades, cosmetics have been synonymous with fleeting beauty: powders fade, lipsticks wear away, scents vanish into the air. Yet as fashion enters a new era of convergence with the art of beauty, these seemingly ephemeral elements are transformed into something lasting, encoded into timeless design. From Haute Couture runways to refined watches or surrealist shoes, blush, lipstick and perfume are no longer just surface embellishments but redefined as lines, structures and materials that speak the language of makeup fashion, turning what once disappeared in moments into long-lasting creations.

When cosmetics become the structure of Haute Couture

On the Haute Couture Autumn/Winter 2022 runway, Olivier Rousteing, Creative Director of Balmain, created one of the most memorable moments for the Jean Paul Gaultier fashion house. He transformed the classic Le Male perfume bottle into a Couture dress: a bodice clad in blue “glass” reminiscent of the bottle, a metallic skirt echoing the tin cap, and a round necklace like the clasp at the bottle’s neck. This makeup fashion piece not only evoked the fragrance itself but also channelled Gaultier’s daring, futuristic spirit, sending a “living perfume bottle” down the runway.
The fusion of cosmetics and clothing remains a striking theme in popular culture. City Girls rapper JT appeared at the launch of MAC’s lipstick collection in a mini dress crafted from dozens of glossy black lipstick tubes, which shimmered like mesh armour. Soon after, Kesha took to the stage in a skirt of elf primer tubes and a bracelet of lip balm casings. Here, cosmetics are no longer mere accessories but the very fabric of makeup fashion, transforming beauty tools into emblems of identity.
These creations reveal that when fashion borrows the language of cosmetics, lipstick, glitter and blush no longer sit as transient layers of makeup but emerge as bold lines and shapes on the body, carrying the permanence of Haute Couture artistry.
Makeup palette on wrist
If clothing transforms cosmetics into form, watches preserve them in exquisite timepieces. The limited-edition Chanel Blush collection offers compelling proof. Creative Director Arnaud Chastaingt drew inspiration from the maison’s own makeup palette, from the depths of black lacquer to the pinks and reds of lipstick.
The J12 Blush features a pink-red ombré bezel with hour markers that recall a blush palette. The satin leather strap of the Première Blush line is as soft as a dusting of powder, while the Première Charms Blush sparkles with shades of pink inspired by Rouge Allure lipsticks. The Secret Watch “Kiss Me” dazzles in the guise of a glossy black and gold lipstick, its diamond-set dial revealed when the cap is unscrewed.

Not stopping there, the J12 Box “Dripping Art” collection presents five Grand Feu enamel watches in lacquered cases, their dials brushed with streaks of colour resembling drops of nail polish. From the rosy bezel to the mastery of enamel, every detail reflects how CHANEL captures the fleeting beauty of makeup in creations built to endure.

When lipstick turns into jewellery and wearable objects
In the world of accessories, fashion houses transform lipsticks and nail polish bottles into surreal accents. Jonathan Anderson’s Loewe Spring/Summer 2022 collection unveiled playful heels shaped like red nail polish bottles, melted candles and even soap bars. Each step became a visual trick, drawing the eye to the unexpected beneath the heel. The lipstick-like designs carried humour and sensuality in equal measure, embodying surrealism and the philosophy of turning everyday objects into art.
Not only Loewe but Chanel too reimagined beauty icons, unveiling the No.5 perfume-bottle clutch in the Cruise 2014 collection. Under Karl Lagerfeld’s hand, the maison’s most enduring fragrance was transformed into a transparent mica bag, fusing two of the house’s greatest legacies: perfume and handbag. Meanwhile, Judith Leiber, the celebrated crystal-clutch brand, introduced a lipstick-shaped minaudière set with sparkling stones, its fuchsia lid and gilded body bringing the radiance of a lipstick to the evening.
These accessories not only pay homage to feminine beauty but also reveal the designers’ wit and audacity. They elevate familiar beauty items into makeup fashion statements, dissolving the line between the everyday and the extraordinary.

In an era where each social media image flashes by in seconds, turning a lipstick or a drop of glitter into a dress or a watch is more than aesthetic play. It is fashion’s way of making the fleeting unforgettable.
