Tatler covered the unveiling of ‘Sparks of Roses’, an immersive scent installation by Maison Francis Kurkdjian at the Shanghai West Bund Art & Design Fair, emphasising cultural exchange between China and France
In November of last year, I had the exciting opportunity to travel to Shanghai, thanks to an invitation from Rustan’s Beauty, to explore the latest creations from the prestigious French perfume house Maison Francis Kurkdjian. During my visit, I had the privilege of interviewing the brand’s founder and master perfumer, Francis Kurkdjian.
Titled Sparks of Roses, the exhibit was an engaging art installation that combined smell and sight, offering a memorable experience. Celebrating 60 years of friendship between China and France, it illustrated the rich cultural exchanges between the two nations.
Those who could see the installation could immerse themselves in the experience using augmented reality devices to see virtual rose petals. A documentary showcased the creation process and craftsmanship behind the installation.

Sparks of Roses highlighted Maison Francis Kurkdjian’s dedication to blending art, fragrance and cultural heritage. It guided attendees on a sensory journey inspired by the journeys of roses and porcelain from China to France.
In our short interview, Kurkdjian exuded a laid-back charm. He wore a dove grey hoodie and matching jogging pants that reflected his relaxed demeanour. In the busy days leading up to our meeting, he was a whirlwind of activity, diligently holding press conferences, attending dinners and engaging with curious attendees at the Art & Design Fair.

When I asked Kurkdjian for his thoughts on the project, he said, “I am satisfied with the project’s outcome; a few things still need fixing because I’m always searching for improvement. But otherwise, yes, I’m thrilled. You have to imagine—we did this from France and never saw it put together until now. We worked for three days to fix everything. I was on my knees trying to arrange the stones, finding the right balance between the big, medium, small and powder.”

I asked him how he viewed art and culture as tools for bridging cultural divides. He replied, “Art is essential and has many meanings. It can help countries influence the world. For instance, Korea has K-pop, while France has its art, fashion and perfume. Culture is about bringing people together. It creates beauty and dreams, as beauty is related to dreaming. Culture also provides different ways to express ideas—through words, objects, shapes and aesthetics. Aesthetics help bridge cultural divides and allow people to share their ideas visually.”

He also emphasised his belief that art is a form of soft power that shapes perceptions of countries worldwide. Looking ahead, Kurkdjian outlined plans, including launching a new perfume in April and organising a significant event in Paris. The brand aims to sustain its esteemed reputation and enhance its Asian presence in 2025.

Lastly, when I asked him about his message for the Asian market and the new year, he stated, “What I would love to convey is the message of peace. We need that; it’s essential. Peace within ourselves and with friends and family are very important values. I also want to emphasise that Maison Francis Kurkdjian is a house of personal freedom. It’s crucial to have the freedom to choose a perfume that suits you—the scent that aligns with your personality—and the confidence to wear perfume from the maison. It’s essential to find your true self, even through a scent. It may seem idealistic, but I believe it’s very important. Feeling good about yourself is vital. If we succeed in this, I would be a happy man.”
