One of the most precious skincare collections ever created, La Prairie harnesses the science of haute-rejuvenation for its exclusive Platinum Rare collection
Gold and silver may be precious metals, but as connoisseurs know, the most exquisite of all has to be platinum. Naturally, for Swiss skincare brand La Prairie, which is famed for its mastery of Swiss cellular science and its use of indulgent ingredients, it was a natural choice to harness the revitalising properties of this rare metal for the Platinum Rare collection, its most luxurious skincare range yet.
The heritage of the range lies in founder Dr Paul Niehans’s cellular therapy research, which he developed at Clinique La Prairie. A pioneer in this science, he believed that caring for the skin’s cells would in turn strengthen and rejuvenate the skin, making it more resistant to external damage.
Powered by the principle of Haute‐Rejuvenation, a proprietary La Prairie technology that works by triggering key rejuvenating processes essential to keeping the skin youthful, the Platinum Rare range seeks to address multiple signs of ageing to give benefits such as increased firmness, an even skin tone, refined texture, smoothened wrinkles and a radiant glow.
At the heart of this exquisite range, updated in 2020, is La Prairie’s Exclusive Cellular Complex, which is enriched by pure platinum. The Complex, which is based on Dr Niehans’s cellular therapy research, is kept so top secret that two separate labs work to formulate its components before it is blended together in a third, different laboratory.

In tandem with platinum, the active ingredient works to activate key rejuvenating processes in the skin such as collagen production, enhancing the skin’s protective barrier and restoring its moisture balance. This triggers further essential processes across the various layers of the skin to promote renewal and functionality to enable old cells to act like younger ones.
As befitting the elevated seven‐piece Platinum Rare collection with its central ethos of shaping eternal beauty, the precious potions are themselves housed in sculptural, amethyst‐toned vessels that resemble unique objets d’art. To celebrate the timelessness of nature that continues to be a rich source of inspiration for La Prairie—a legacy left behind by Dr Niehans—the house has collaborated with Swiss artist Douglas Mandry to create an installation that expresses the idea of shaping beauty through art. Mandry’s artistic practice, which combines both art and science, often explores the landscape of Swiss glaciers, an endangered aspect of nature due to the effects of climate change and global warming.

For La Prairie, he created a work titled Gravity Flow Fragmented, a multi‐layered examination of the phenomenon of melting glaciers to place the spotlight on how humans interact with nature. The installation comprises 20 unique amethyst sculptures hand‐blown in Switzerland from 100 per cent recycled glass. To inspire his creative process, the artist collaborated with La Prairie and its long‐term partner ETH Zurich to discover and express the impact of climate change on glaciers through visual art. Using cutting‐edge scanning tools, Mandry explored ice cavities to generate three‐dimensional models of the glaciers’ mills. These served as the moulds for his unique sculptures, allowing him to bring the melting glaciers to a broader audience.
In a touching gesture of how climate change impacts everyone on the globe, no matter their geographical location, the art installation, which was shown at West Bund Art & Design 2022 in Shanghai, was in fact a continuation of Gravity Flow, a large‐scale installation that Mandry had unveiled on the summit of Saint Moritz in Switzerland in August last year. Both works are part of La Prairie’s first carbon‐neutral art project, which was fully offset with partner Climeworks, in order to emphasise the importance of this pressing global issue beyond borders.
Fittingly, this collaboration is also a showcase of how, through La Prairie’s groundbreaking Platinum Rare skincare collection, eternal beauty can be shaped through the synergy of science and art.
The Platinum Rare collection is available at the La Prairie flagship boutique at B1-15A Ion Orchard as well as the La Prairie counters at Level 2 Metro Paragon, Level 1 Takashimaya Department Store and Level 1 TANGS at Tang Plaza.
