What better way to inject a little joy into your summer look than to experiment with a bright, playful hair colour? We’ve heard that lovely pink tones will be going strong (as usual) for summer this year, and the trend doesn’t seem to be disappearing any time soon. There are so many different and beautiful variations you might not have previously considered and explored yet—whether you want to achieve a bold or a very subtle look. 
 
If neons aren’t your thing, “try soft pastel pinks, rose gold or blush pink hues to create an eye-catching look,” says Abi, a hairstylist at Love Hair. For the ladies who aren’t sure a full head of pink is for them, start off with dark brown tones and then explode into bright pink at the ends to add some drama to your hair. The key to this hairstyle is a smooth colour transition.

Nearly every colourist we spoke to mentioned grown-out roots is one of the season’s (or, even the year’s) biggest hair colour trends. Thought you need to touch up those dark roots to make them blend seamlessly with your previous dye job for a perfect hairstyle? Same here. But things look a bit different since the coronavirus lockdown, where people are looking for natural yet polished hair colour designs that require less maintenance, so they don’t have to rush back to the salon for root touch-ups.  
 
According to Alistair Rae, creative director of Bruneblonde, this summer we’ll be seeing "a more lived-in approach to colour, with 'quarantine-proof' grow out." "Lighter, more sun-kissed ends are created to complement natural hair colour for a graceful grow outlook. Colour will be more subtle, with face-framing highlights to add a pop of colour”, explains Alistair. Ash brown or any other natural dark hair colours will serve a perfect base for warm blonde or caramel brown highlights throughout mid-lengths and ends. The result? A beautiful combination that looks amazing with soft, feminine waves.

Speaking of low-maintenance hair trends, amplifying your own beautiful shade with subtle highlights or colours that closely matches your original hair is another good idea to upgrade your look this season. As co-founder of Bruneblonde David Gouygou puts it, “Focus on what nature has given you—it’s the best colour for you.” 

But what makes this style trendy and special? It’s all about the contouring and shadow technique, which utilises subtle highlights to add contrast to the hair, making individual strands brighter to enhance your natural shade and hair texture. For brunettes, David suggests opting for amber and ash brown shades as bases, then create honey blonde highlights to add dimension to your locks. For blondes who are itching to try something new, do a mini balayage with icy hues of champagne; you’ll be getting compliments all day.

“Expect to see more a lot of blonde shades and radical colour changes this summer. For the ladies who had a lifetime of black hair and wanted to switch things up a bit, blonde is always going to be a winner”, says Emmanuel Faipoux, founder and artistic director of his eponymous hair salon.  
 
Though dyeing your dark hair blonde is not an easy or quick process, which requires several rounds of bleaching to get rid of the yellow and orange tones for the ideal blonde shade—and of course, extra upkeep—this colour is a real head-turner. Not only the colour will give a beachy and sun-kissed vibe to the hair, it will also make your warm skin shines more. Just be sure to consult your hairstylist to determine which colours best flatter your skin tone, and maintain those blonde locks with proper toners, treatments to neutralize brassiness and give nourishment to your hair.
