Go behind the scenes in this exclusive interview with Chanel’s in-house perfumer Olivier Polge as he shares more about the creative process of Chanel’s new perfume, Comète, and its ingredients

When it comes to haute perfumery, fragrance transcends mere scent—it becomes a form of expression for its wearer. Chanel’s latest olfactory creation, Comète, embodies this ethos elegantly. Joining the renowned Les Exclusifs De Chanel collection, this new eau de parfum truly encapsulates the spirit and style of Gabrielle Chanel herself, offering a luxurious and timeless olfactory experience.

The fragrance opens with a burst of cherry blossom, fresh and delicate, that seamlessly transitions into an ethereal blend of heliotrope and iris extract. The result is a powdery, rich aroma with an elusive musk accord that lingers on the skin.

In this Tatler-exclusive piece, Chanel’s in-house perfumer Olivier Polge tells us more about the creative process of the new Comète perfume and the story behind its ingredients.

Why is Comète a unique fragrance? What makes it stand out?
Comète is a skin fragrance that creates a unique and almost intimate sensation when it is worn. Over time, the skin brings the perfume to life, for a fragrance trail that changes depending on who is wearing it. With this creation, I wanted to explore a new olfactory identity for Les Exclusifs De Chanel and to imagine something enveloping and luminous. Comète is not constructed with obvious powdery notes such as vanilla or tonka bean. The heliotrope accord, in combination with iris, explores unusual olfactory facets with more almondy and slight fruity nuances. This is what makes Comète stand out from the other Les Exclusifs De Chanel fragrances. There is a richness and complexity to it that envelops the skin and reacts very differently on each person.

Why did you choose iris as the leading ingredient in Comète?
I really love iris and I consider this ingredient as my “lucky star.” It is a complex olfactory note that creates extraordinary effects. Blended in a composition, it reveals floral, powdery and woody facets. At Chanel we cultivate our own iris pallida in Grasse, and that is the one we used in the structure of Comète. It is an ingredient that creates depth in this powdery-fruity heliotrope accord. Thanks to iris, the entire Comète accord gains in softness and grows richer.

How did you manage to give olfactory material form to “stardust”?
Comète is a multi-facetted fragrance that shines thanks to an original combination of ingredients. The heliotrope note develops floral and powdery accents that are particularly enveloping. The top notes reveal an almond-like facet which makes me think of a cherry blossom accord. These are the notes that give me an impression of a luminous fragrance trail.
