When it comes to the Chinese social network, one trend follows fast on the heels of another, no looking back. After shower makeup, revenge makeup and chic goth makeup—associated with the heroine of Netflix series Wednesday—now it’s time for an ample dose of nostalgia and romance with coquette makeup.
The beauty aesthetic is causing a sensation on TikTok with no less than 7.7 billion views for the hashtag #coquette, 1.6 billion for #coquetteaesthetic, more than 300 million for #coquettecore and more than 120 million for #coquettemakeup. This surge shows a genuine enthusiasm for this aesthetic that’s inspired by pretty, romantic stylistic elements.
This trend also celebrates an ultra-feminine style—that users are fully embracing—through bows, pearls, lace, butterfly patterns, flowers and other details that are each more kitsch than the next.
And of course, don’t forget pink, the flagship colour of this slightly nostalgic beauty inspiration, which pays tribute to the romanticism of the 19th century.
This is particularly reflected by retro accessories and packaging, from antique mirrors to gilded accents and ribbon-like headbands—sort of a mix between Daphne Bridgerton and Blair Waldorf.

On TikTok, the beauty looks associated with the coquette makeup trend vary considerably from one user to another, but it is clear that blush, the flagship beauty product of 2022, is once again in the spotlight.
