Celebrating ten years of the Portraits collection, British fragrance house Penhaligon’s welcomes its ultimate mastermind—a scent governed by sparkling orange blossom, Chantilly cream, and creamy sandalwood

For a decade, Penhaligon’s Portraits family has turned high society into a playground of charm, secret liaisons, and impeccably bad behaviour. From the private clubs of Mayfair to the manicured gardens of Kensington and Richmond, these olfactory caricatures have proved that one can indeed age disgracefully.

To mark ten years of deception, desire, and distinguished scents, the family gathers in London for a grand anniversary celebration. Stepping out from the shadows to claim her place at the head of the table is the collection’s newest and most formidable figure: The Baroness.

A scent built on restraint

Positioned quietly between Parliament and Pall Mall, The Baroness is the original influencer—a figure whose presence is felt long before she is seen. Master perfumer Daphné Bugey composes The Baroness around a quiet kind of power rather than an obvious one. The fragrance opens on chantilly, its curtain-like softness giving very little away, before orange blossom emerges at the heart—graceful, measured, and entirely in control of the room. Incense and mandarin move beneath it, with geranium surfacing under her direction rather than by accident. The scent then settles into a lingering, sensual base of sandalwood, cedarwood, and vanilla, leaving an unmistakable trail of strength and sophistication.

The Baroness arrives as the Portraits Collection turns ten, and Penhaligon’s marks the occasion less with a retrospective than with a reunion. Over the past decade, this fictional family has scattered itself across London’s postcodes—Lord George scheming through Mayfair’s private clubs, Duchess Rose holding court in Primrose Hill, the Duke causing quiet chaos in Soho, Finley tending devotedly (and suspiciously often) to a garden that isn’t strictly his. Each character carries their own fragrance and their own alibi, and none of them, it turns out, are entirely to be trusted.

Encased in the collection’s signature heavy glass bottle and topped with a polished gazelle head cap, The Baroness joins an iconic Who’s Who of London society.

As the Portraits family continues to leave a trail of unforgettable scent across the capital, this latest creation stands as a tribute to those who master the art of intrigue, ruling not through noise, but through sheer, irresistible influence.
