Redheads have gotten the recognition they deserve this year, with Jennifer Lawrence sporting the colour in ‘Don’t Look Up’, and we have a feeling that demand has only just begun

Ginger, auburn or strawberry blonde—whatever you call it, all of these shades fall under the umbrella of red hair, and we’ve noticed that this look has been getting a lot of love, especially in the run up to 2022.

We saw plenty of celebrities rocking fiery shades both in films and real life, and they looked fantastic. It’s made us want to dabble in ginger shades, and here are five notable red hair moments to serve as inspiration for the year ahead:

1. Jennifer Lawrence in ‘Don’t Look Up’

We usually see Jennifer Lawrence in some shade of blonde or brunette, but we have to say that her colouring really suits red. Playing PHD student Kate Dibiasky, this film sees Lawrence discover a comet that could end the world. She tries to convince everybody of the truth, but no-one takes her seriously.

As a result, she’s giving “seriously-smart-but-incredibly-frustrated” energy, and this hairdo is reflective of that—mullet, baby bangs, and a deep shade of maroon that all allude to hacking expert Lisbeth Salander of Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.

2. Scarlett Johansson in ‘Black Widow’

Last year Natasha Romanoff (played by Scarlett Johansson) got her own film to explain her backstory in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Aside from Johansson’s beauty and physical skill, her faux red locks are noticeable from afar as she fights villains and engages in quick-witted banter with co-star Florence Pugh.

While Johansson rocked shorter dos in in the Avenger films, this time she’s sporting longer locks with braided styles to make her appear younger, which is necessary for the film timeline as we’re looking at how Romanoff came to be known as ‘Black Widow’.

3. Sarah Snook in ‘Succession’

Siobhan Roy, also known as Shiv, is the only daughter of fictional media tycoon Logan Roy, and possibly the most type-A personality on TV . Constantly scheming and manipulating to make sure she gets her fair share of her family company’s pie with a hefty side of status, she’s always put together.

Portrayed by Sarah Snook who kept her natural ginger for the role, her hair is cut in a severe bob with a deep side part. In addition to working with her natural colouring, the look works overall—blonde would wash Snook out, and darker hair would be too striking. Shiv’s character is always on the side-lines, and you’re never quite sure what her true intentions are—red keeps us guessing.

4. Dua Lipa for Versace

This pop star is at the top of her game, and Dua Lipa has been turning major looks at every red carpet and performance this year. Donatella Versace recognises talent and major presence when she sees it, so it’s no surprise that she took Lipa under her wing to be the face of the Versace autumn-winter 2021 campaign.

In a new look for the singer, she wore a bright copper wig with a full fringe and plenty of length underneath a black headscarf, which complemented the red, blue and black patterned dress and handbag of the season. We hope she pulls red out again for another era of Dua Lipa.

5. Gigi Hadid at the Met Gala

Gigi Hadid also sported red hair for the Versace autumn-winter 2021 campaign, but instead of a wig, she did it for real. She continued to keep up the colour through the rest of the year and experimented with different shades, landing on a rusty berry red, which really brought out her green eyes.

Our favourite transformation was her 2021 Met Gala ensemble, for which she wore head-to-toe Prada and elevated her look with a super high and voluminous ponytail. She offset the dark tone of her hair with a custom mixed Prada-blue eyeshadow.
