Created with the highest quality of raw materials available, we list five reaons why we love the European fragrance house

Byredo founder Ben Gorham decided that creating fragrances would prove to be more rewarding than painting after a chance encounter with renowned perfumer Pierre Wulff peaked his interest. Gorham is a former pro-basketball player with no formal training in fragrances and had just finished a degree in fine art – but he took the plunge anyway. With collaborations with the likes of Acne Studios and Oliver Peoples, to establishing a cult following in recent years, we list five reasons why we’re head over heels in love with Byredo and their whimsicial fragrances:

Their Attention to Detail

Ben Gorham

With the help of some of the world’s renowned perfumers, namely Olivia Giacobetti and Jerome Epinette, Gorham explained his olfactory desires and let them create the compositions. Gorham is a native Swede born to an Indian mother and a Canadian father, he studed fine art at the Stockholm Art School which perhaps accounts for Byredo’s Scandinavian design principles, evident from the bottles, to the hand cream dispensers, to the overall chic design of their boutiques.

The Eccentric Names

From Gypsy Water to Mister Marvelous – these aren’t names you normally come across in any beauty aisle. Each name is a hint to the narrative of the fragrance, Gypsy Water being a glamorisation of the Romany lifestyle that’s based on the fascination of the myth; with top notes of bergamot, lemon, pepper, and juniper berries.

Comparatively, Mister Marvelous is a tribute to the modern gentlemen, a celebration of someone a little bit different, twisted, or turned out of shape – someone interesting whose qualities are marvelous; with top notes of mandarin leaves and neroli flowers.

There’s Something For Everyone

Out of the 22 fragrances, we narrowed it down to one that we love, the newly released Rose of No Man’s Land. A tribute to the nurses who saved thousands of lives on the frontlines of WWII – the story is one of selflessness and compassion with the perfume acting like a soothing balm. With top notes of pink pepper and Turkish rose petals – we found our new favourite fragrance for the Autumn season.

It’s Not Just About Fragrances

From candles, body lotion, body wash, to handcream, hair spray, roll-on oil and travel kits – there’s a lot more than meets the eye. For example, the candles are completely separate from the fragrances, we love Bibliothéque for it’s rich scent that reminds us of an old French library or Tree House which is like smelling the fragrance of freshly cut grass in the palm of your hands.
