A fifth-generation grower-producer that specialises in chardonnay-dominant cuvées that show off the character of Vertus Premier Cru.
Vertus, Côte des Blancs; 8.7 hectares, predominantly in the chalky soils of Vertus, with a mix of chardonnay and pinot noir.
Those who appreciate a classical Côte des Blancs style – with some grower richness on the nose – will appreciate this cuvée, which has partial (25%) maturation in Burgundian oak barrels and partial (25%) malolactic conversion for softening, resulting in a wine of incredible finesse wrapped in a blanket of richness. The vines used are 40 years old.
The Clos Faubourg Notre Dame is one of the rare clos of Champagne and is wholly owned by the estate; its stone walls and old vines give impressive ripeness and concentration.
A rich brown butter, milk toffee nose with macadamia nuts, white chocolate and soursop fruit gradually neatens up with time. Much cleaner on the palate, with relatively straightforward lemon fruit and blazing acidity suffused nicely through a seamless, medium weight shape. Not particularly forceful in its yeastiness, this instead shows a lemon tea bitter sweetness to finish.
Rich Japanese winter specialties, like sukiyaki.
Main course or after dinner.
The friend who spends the summer with an ice tea in hand.
Rich, toffeed nose; clean, polished palate.
