What
A family-operated grand marque founded in 1931, also one of the ten largest.
Where
Reims; 288 ha of estate vineyards (largest family-owned holdings in Champagne), mainly in the Côte des Blancs and Montagne de Reims, covering nearly half the house’s needs.
Why
Introduced in 2002, this cuvée represents Taittinger’s first step towards producing single-site wines. It comes from the estate vineyards around its Château de la Marquetterie, where Pierre Taittinger was billeted during WWI. “Marquetterie” refers to the vineyards’ patchwork of chardonnay and pinot noir. Made exclusively from first press wines; 30 per cent is matured in oak.
What else
"Folie" means a steep parcel but also a summer residence in the countryside. The prestige cuvée for which the house is known, Comtes de Champagne, a Blanc de Blancs, was outstanding in 2008, exemplifying the house’s upright, elegant style.
Tasting Notes
Saline and taut with iodine, spark plug, citron and yuzu. Palate is likewise precise and focused, with an extremely taut, clean texture, a chalky strip of acidity and citrussy fruit that keeps building to a gentle, quinine bitterness on the finish. Conifer-like, green notes swim through the mid-palate.
