A natural-leaning grower estate in the Côte des Bar is led by Bordeaux-trained agricultural engineer and oenologist Leroy, who now vinifies a third of the crop at his family estate.
Meurville, Côte des Bar; 9ha, 70% Pinot Noir, 20% Chardonnay, ~10% Meunier.
Leroy’s hand with rosé is truly impressive, seamlessly integrating ripe strawberry fruit (from 15% red wine) with savoury herbs and buttery pastry tones to thrilling effect.
These surprisingly affordable wines have real pedigree, with the used oak coming from Hubert Lamy of Saint Aubin and Thomas Pico of Chablis.
The nose opens with tart-sweet strawberry fruit with raw butter pastry and restraining tones of myrtle and oregano. A very frothy mousse initially disguises the texture, which is lightly oily with blazingly fresh acidity that becomes increasingly exposed. The fruit starts quite primary but gains pleasing alpine herb green nuances. Well-oiled, powdery phenolics on the back provide an anchor along with the acidity, which is still blazing, complementing the toasted bread yeastiness on the back. This is ultimately quite classic rosé but with an added dose of character.

A casual Cantonese restaurant where your group brings their own bottles
A great pick for occasions calling for rosé champagne—think Valentine’s Day, bachelorette parties, or baby showers—but without feeling patronising, thanks to its cool grower credentials and a bottle that’s refreshingly free of anything overly sparkly or embarrassing.
