What

A fast-rising, quality-focused cooperative started by seven grower families in 1947 with an unusual speciality, Chardonnay from the Montagne de Reims.

Where

Reims; the cooperative has access to over 450 ha of vineyards, over half in the Montagne de Reims, but only the best is saved for their brand.

Why

Don’t let the price point (or cooperative label) fool you, this is serious juice, with its 7-8% red wine drawn from a perpetual reserve of Pinot Noir, and beyond that, the NV blend has 30-35% reserves, adding richness and depth.

What Else

Unusually, every bottle from Palmer is fermented in the bottle it’s sold in, whether 375ml or 15l.

Tasting Notes

Tight and mineral, this has a paraffin and beeswax opening, just hinting at white grapefruit and a layer of water biscuit yeastiness. A very forthright, mouth-filling mousse gives way to a lightly oily midpalate, its bittersweetness growing exaggerated on the back. There is less over yeastiness here than anticipated, mainly a seltzer, flinty smokiness on the middle and back palates. Acidity is fresh, just giving some tapering on the back and front to keep this energetic and vibrant.
