Damery, Vallée de la Marne; 6.5 hectares.
This pure Meunier, still quite a novel style in the region, comes from a site in St Martin d’Ablois with vines planted in 1966. It is matured in 600L fûts de chênes (oak barrels) that add to the richness of the style.
The labels with their debossed parcel maps are very tactile and appealing.
The nose is strikingly nutty, with brown butter, coconut and nutmeg, bitter almond and ginger biscuit, though not much fresh fruit. The palate delivers cola on the front with salty calamansi citrus and Ceylon cinnamon — very sensuous and attractive, only lightly sharp and volatile. It loses a bit of energy on the back once the acidity quietens. The body is never terribly broad but there is always some grip, becoming waxy and sensuous on the back.
Southeast Asian curries and other dishes with coconut and rich, toasted flavours.
After dinner.
The friend whose go-to drink is a dark and stormy.
Nutty, biscuity and exotic.
