What

The maison founded in 1843 by Joseph Krug, an immigrant from Mainz who rose to General Manager at Jacquesson before leaving to form his own house focused on “ultimate quality.” Considered by various experts to be the single greatest champagne producer.

Where

Reims; only around 20 ha of estate vineyards covering roughly 1/3 of production needs, including in Grand Crus Ambonnay, Aÿ, Le Mesnil-sur-Oger and Oger.

Why

Although Krug’s most expensive wines are the rare Clos de Mesnil and Ambonnay, Grande Cuvée was always key to Joseph Krug’s quality philosophy—in his little black book, he described “Champagne Number 1: the fullest expression of Champagne” to be created without fail every year. This Édition is based on 2008, already a contender for vintage of the century, and its 127 individual components from 11 different years (back to 1990) have formed an orchestra worthy of the year.

Tasting Notes

Opens with an almost baroque toast and smoke—hickory, teak and sage brush—delivering a robust, lemon curd sweetness through the middle. Structurally it is very classical: harmoniously proportioned with seamless acid and texture, flowing evenly over the palate. A delightful, sherbet sweet-tartness enlivens the finish.

Try It With

Dark-fleshed fish, grilled or smoked.
