What

A tiny sustainable grower based in the western Marne valley run by mother and son duo Éliane Delalot and Jérôme Lefèvre.

Where

Essômes-sur-Marne, Vallée de la Marne ; Rated X is made from a lieu-dit called Les Boulards in Charly‑sur‑Marne.

Why

Besides the novelty (this is a demi-sec meunier with no dosage and significant residual sugar from the first fermentation; only 1,900 bottles were made), it’s a wholesome-feeling way to experience the sweeter styles of champagne so popular prior to the mid-20th century.

What else

Farming is organic and principally manual.

Tasting Notes

Nose is madeira-like, with golden raisins and dried apricots, varnish and preserved orange peel. The palate leans toward dried peach; a rancio nuttiness weaves in and out of the grainy textured, unexpectedly light body. The sweetness is balanced by acidity, finishing the wine with a pleasant toastiness.

Try It With

Char siu and other barbecue dishes.

When To Drink

Entrées or cheese.

Perfect For

Your friend who loves a bourbon Old Fashioned.

Tatler Tip

Make sure everyone knows it's sweet before pouring or they'll be startled (it does say Brut Nature!)

TL/DR

Nutty, eccentric non-dosage demi-sec.
