What

A maison founded in 1798 and one of the key houses through the 1800s, now a small but fast-rising star once again.

Dizy, Vallée de la Marne; 33ha estate vineyards in the Grande Vallée or the Côte des Blancs.

Why

This particular chardonnay parcel was planted at the crest of a steep slope in Dizy in 1960, reflected in its high-toned aromatics. The wines are fermented in large format oak for added complexity.

What else

The Chicquet brothers’ decision to stop blending their NV for consistency but rather target the best quality possible in each vintage kicked off the trend for edition numbering. Jacquesson was also the original workplace of Joseph Krug, who became its general manager before leaving to found his own house. Try the excellent 700-series NV and look for the other single-vineyards: Champ Caïn and Aÿ Vauzelle Terme.

Tasting Notes

A nose of fresh-cut green apples, celery and a bouquet of wildflowers seeps into a palate dense with nutty Marcona almonds and olive brine. It has medium breadth, with a tight, energetic middle, but it definitely doesn’t feel acid-driven. The finish is very dry but with a pungent straw-like quality and marked bitterness.
